First United Methodist Church of Peabody History
The church's history as a separate organization dates back to the 1839.
Before that, in 1830, there was a Sunday School in Harmony Village in South Peabody.
In 1836, services moved to Goodrich's Hall on Park Street, and after two years, it moved to Armory Hall, at the corner of Holten and Sewall streets. The Rev. Amos Walton began regular preaching in July 1840. The church numbered 23 members.
Services moved to a building on Washington Street, above Oak Street, but this proved too small, so a site was purchased on Washington Street, near Sewall Street, in 1843, at the cost of $672.
About this time, the South Congregational Society offered the church committee what had been the Old South Meeting House, which was built in 1836.
So, in 1843, the building, minus the vestries, was purchased for $2,500. It cost another $550 to move it from the former location of the Peabody courthouse by horse and wagon, and another $939.64 to furnish it.
The old church burned down in 1985. That was also the year, during the time the Rev. Warren Hyam led the 100-member church, that Haven from Hunger was founded. It had been serving two meals a week to the needy since May of that year.
A few days after the fire, Hunger from Haven used a flatbed truck to serve meals out in the parking lot.
Haven from Hunger later bought the Masonic Temple on Wallis Street for its present location. The church broke ground for a new church building on Aug. 7, 1986, and it was completed on April 5, 1987.
