Who we are
We have a Sunday School. Our congregation is small but active. We volunteer in our local hospital. Our members help with the local blood donor clinic once a year. We visit members in the Senior Citizen's Lodge.

Sunday School
Sunday school ends the last Sunday of June and typically begins the second Sunday of September. All children are welcome while their parents attend our service.
On Sunday mornings, children enter the sanctuary with their parents and are present for the beginning of the service. The pastors calls the children up to the front after the opening sections of the service. He speaks to them, usually explaining in very simple terms, the Gospel Lesson of the day. Following that the children are dismissed for Sunday School.
The curriculum for the classes are from a program called “The One Room School.”
It includes music and games, plus lessons based on both the Old Testament and the New Testament. All the children are in the same class. The lesson is taught and there is different worksheets and activities for different age groups supporting the bible lesson that has been taught.
The teachers are volunteers. Each volunteer teaches for two Sundays, then the next volunteer takes over. There is a rotation of six teachers.
At Christmas time the children put on a simple presentation that tells the story of the birth of Christ.
The children are presented with a certificate in June. There are no lessons taught during July and August.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church History
The Board of Directors of American Missions wanted to expand the parish of Stavely. In 1961 Don Sjoberg, director of Missions and Pastor Jim Chell, surveyed High River for the prospect of a Lutheran Church in the town. On September 17th, 1961 Good Shepherd started holding services in the Memorial Centre and later moved to the Anglican Church. On Nov. 3rd, 1963 the Charter was signed and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church became a member of the Western Canada Synod of the Lutheran Church of America.
In 1964 the congregation bought 20 acres of land from Leland Soderberg. The council borrowed $83,739.00. The church and the parsonage were built. The architect was David Warner and the builder was Jason Construction. The construction was completed in 1966. Soon, there after, in order to reduce the amount of the onerous mortgage the church sold 17.7 acres.
In May of 1980 a fence was built around the parsonage. In the next year, 1981, the sanctuary received a new coat of stain and varnish.
In 1982 the congregation passed a motion allowing an addition to be built on the church. The new addition was built and it was dedicated on Sept. 25th, 1983.
In 1990 The Foothills Parish was set up and Good Shepherd along with Pastor Keith Peterson and intern Brian Schultz began the process of establishing our sister church, Holy Cross Lutheran, in Okotoks. Then when services started there, Pastor Peterson decided to stay with Holy Cross and our church had to call a new pastor.
In 1990 Armand and Beth Lian left a large gift of money to our church. Many upgrades and repairs were made to the church and parsonage. On May 16th, 1991 the congregation decided to add a second addition to the church. This renovation added the Lian Educational Wing to the building. The Lian Wing consists of four Sunday School rooms, a secretary's office, a pastor's office, and two washrooms. This wing has a separate furnace and water heater.
That takes us to our present situation. Our church flooded on June 20th, 2013 and although that was a disaster, we want to look at the positive side of that event. Good Shepherd found out that the insurance company would cover the damages. TruPoint Restoration, which has turned out to be a wonderful company, under the leadership of Lance Vickers, was assigned to do the repairs and we have a lovely, lovely new church. Although it has been a difficult eight months we are so pleased with our newly restored church and parsonage. Thanks be to God.
