Who we are
Highwood is a mature congregation in transition. While the core of our membership have been members for 10 to 50 years, younger families, many of ethnic diversity have been participating in and joining Highwood. We have a strong heritage of active ministry in helping the disadvantaged both in Calgary and across the world. Highwood began sponsoring refugees in 1996 with a family from Ethiopia. We are currently in the process of sponsoring refugee families from Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, and Colombia. We are a companion congregation with Mision Vida Nueva in Bogata Colombia. We have a ministry of sandwiches and casseroles for the Drop in Centre, the congregation enables the pastor to counsel and give aid to people in need. A few of these people participate in worship. We give significant aid to one neighborhood family each Christmas, who have been selected by the school system. As well as reaching out, our congregation has a strong commitment to worship. We have a long tradition of excellence in music. We are in the process of learning all the liturgies in the ELW including the Spanish one so we may us it to welcome the refugee family from Colombia. Our choir is small but provides inspiration beyond its size. We have a pipe organ, which is used for the core of worship although the congregation is learning international Christian hymns and rhythms. The members of Highwood have an abiding tradition of caring for each other both through congregational social events as well as personal contact. We take seriously our call to nurture each other while reaching out to and involving others in the life of the body of Christ.
