Who we are
Our Foundation
Holy Cross Catholic Church was founded by the Jesuits in 1939 to serve the African American Catholic Community of Durham, N.C., in collaboration with the Diocese of Raleigh. In September 2014, the Franciscan Friars Conventual from Our Lady of the Angels Province in Maryland assumed responsibilities of pastoral leadership for the parish. The Minister Provincial Fr. James McCurry, OFM Conv. assigned Fr. Andrew Santamauro, OFM Conv., as the first Franciscan pastor of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Durham. Read about the Conventional Franciscans at The Franciscan Order Conventual website. With Fr. Andy, we are in relationship with two other parishes in the area served by the Franciscan Order Conventual friars: the Newman centers at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Mission Statement
We are historically African American, culturally diverse community that welcomes all people to membership and participation in our liturgies, ministries, parish life and leadership. We gather to worship our Lord Jesus Christ in joy and are committed to addressing the needs of the Durham community and the people of God through direct service and promotion of social justice. We proclaim the Gospel by our lives: evangelizing, educating our youth and practicing a spirituality that finds God in all things. Vision Statement
Our vision is to be a Catholic community of faith, characterized by praise, reverence and service to God our Lord. We strive to be actively engaged in our mission, church and community in collaboration with others, enabling us to be "a fire that kindles other fires."

Children's Faith Formation
Faith formation helps youth from pre-kindergaraden through young adult to learn about the Catholic faith, including prayers, Sacraments, and liturgy so that they can grow to live their faith fully as adults. Holy Cross's Faith Formation program includes instruction, fun activities, and service opportunities.
Faith formation classes for children pre-kindergraden to grade 8 are held at the church prior to Mass on most Sundays, from mid-September to May (8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.). Each summer, Holy Cross hosts a Vacation Bible School for youth from ages 4 to 10.
Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Eucharist is usually done in the second grade. Confirmation preparartion is for older youth, typically in high school, and includes a retreat.
Parents of children in faith formation meet monthly for prayer in the Sanctuary. Check the bulletin and calendar for times and dates.
