Plymouth Seventh-day Adventist Church History
Adventism in America has its roots in the worldwide spiritual awakening of the early 1800s. Many people were inspired to study the Bible and search for its truth. The church was organized and took the name "Seventh-day Adventist" in 1863. As the name suggests, Adventists believe in observance of the day of worship on the seventh day of the week (the sabbath of the Bible) and in the second coming (or second advent) of Christ. We believe in using the Bible and the Bible alone as the only rule and guide of doctrine.
The local congregation was organized on October 31, 1931, after a series of tent meetings by R.F. Pitts and Floyd A. Sanders. There were 29 original members, which grew to a high of 47 by 1954.
It took over five years to raise funds and to build the first church building, located on Thayer Street in Plymouth. The first meeting was held there on November 19, 1944, although the pews did not arrive until the fall of 1945. The building was officially dedicated on Sabbath, August 24, 1946.
Since then, a new church was constructed at 11533 7B Road, east of Lilac Road. This new building is handicapped accessible and includes more space for public events. The fellowship hall and classrooms were dedicated in December 2007, and the sanctuary was completed in 2011.
