St. Andrews Roman Catholic Church History
Welcome to the historic St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church, the first Roman Catholic Church to be built in the northern part of Thunder Bay. For many years the parish has played a major role in the development and growth of the Catholic Faith in Northwestern Ontario.
The first Church, at the corner of Red River Road and Algoma Street, was dedicated under the patronage of St. Andrew in 1875. Its first parish priest was Fr. Richard Baxter, S.J. In 1881 a new Church had to be built to replace the original which had been destroyed by fire.
In 1920, the second St. Andrew’s Church was moved to its present site and now operates as the Dew Drop Inn Soup Kitchen.
The parish served as the headquarters and home base of Jesuit missionary activity in the region for many years. It became the headquarters for the Jesuits, after the first of such headquarters in the region, The Fort William Mission, just south of present day Thunder Bay, ended its operations in 1906. St. Andrew’s missionaries served as chaplains to the Canadian Pacific Railway workers and their families along the northern shore of Lake Superior.
The Jesuits served St. Andrew’s Church until 1999, when the parish had its first diocesan priest, Rev. Father Scott Gale.
Through the experiences of Jesuit missionaries passing through St. Andrew’s rectory, the parish was, and would continue to be, exposed to a regional perspective on the development of Roman Catholicism in North Western Ontario.

Open our ears to hear
Blessed Lord, open our ears to hear what Thou speakest and our eyes to see as Thou seest. Give us hearts to beat in sympathy with Thine at the sight of every little child; and above all, our Lord, to understand and experience how surely and how blessedly Thou fulfilest Thy promise, "Whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me."
