Who we are
History of St. Cronan's Church
St.Cronan's or Mochua who died in 637 founded his monastery in Balla (Balla Alainn), the Beautiful Wall which enclosed monastery and blessed well, Tobar Mhuire.
Part of the round tower and a medieval altar remains. Until 1879. Balla Holy Well was the major pil-grimage centre in Mayo. The Monastery survived, despite a plague in 664 and being subjected to attacks from the Vikings and the Normans, until it was finally suppressed at the Reformation. Other churches were built on the Monastic site, the last of these surviving until 1913 when it became a parish hall. Loona, another ancient church in the parish, is asso-ciated with St Loona said to be St Patrick's own nephew. Adamhnan established a church in Manulla. Another church was established at Drum. The present stone cut church of St. Cronan in Balla was built in 1913 through the work of Fr John McDermott who collected money in England and in America. It was completed by Fr T. J. Ready.
