Who we are

St. Matthew the Apostle Anglican Church began in Henry Farm when the Rev. Paul Morley gathered a few neighbours together to celebrate Holy Communion in their homes. A portable church was erected, and the first service was celebrated on September 13, 1964. (The portable is now a parish hall for St. James the Apostle, Sharon, ON). Five years later the permanent building containing the sanctuary for St. Matthew the Apostle, Oriole was erected, and the inaugural service was held on January 25, 1970.

The building complex was completed in two stages, with the Christian Education Building to the east being constructed first, followed by the main sanctuary area. The complex is of concrete block and brick construction with asphalt shingled roofs.

The Christian Ed area is comprised of a Fellowship Room, Welcome Room, office space, washrooms and kitchen. The Fellowship Hall is air-conditioned to accommodate the Montessori School, which operates throughout the school year. A fully equipped nursery and exterior play area are provided. The Fellowship Hall is used on a regular basis by Alcoholics Anonymous and other community groups. The Welcome Room has recently been renovated and is used for smaller gatherings. The kitchen is fully functional and is equipped with a stove, refrigerator and microwave oven.

The sanctuary is uniquely designed with the altar centrally placed with seating arranged on three sides. The pulpit, organ and choir are located on the west wall. A stained glass skylight surmounts the altar cross, and stained glass clerestory windows surround the altar area. Wooden resonance wall panels represent the congregation’s ethnic diversity, and wooden pews accommodate one hundred and eighty people. At each of the four corners of the sanctuary, a room is located for meetings and storage purposes. The sacristy is conveniently positioned behind the sanctuary, and a roomy narthex, complete with storage cupboards and kitchenette, is located to the east entrance to the sanctuary. The sanctuary is wheel chair accessible only from the north entrance door.

On the lower level beneath the sanctuary are found the choir room, a large Hall, two church offices, washrooms and ample storage areas. The Lower Hall is used for parish functions, weekly services by the Beulah House of God, the Kumon School and for the St. Matthew’s monthly clothing sale. These areas are not wheel chair accessible.

Leader Bio:
Before coming to St. Matthew the Apostle Oriole, Sherri completed her Assistant Curacy at St. Cuthbert’s Leaside. Prior to that she worked as a chaplain, first in the youth correctional system and then in hospital and long-term care settings. It was in the context of this work that Sherri received her call to ordained ministry. She was ordained a deacon on May 5th, 2019 at St. James Cathedral and a priest on October 18th, 2020 at St. Cuthbert’s.

Sherri received her Master of Divinity from the University of St. Michael’s College. She completed placements at the Church of St. Stephen-in-the-Fields and St. Timothy’s Agincourt, and was baptized and confirmed as an adult at the Church of the Redeemer. Her passion for mission, outreach, and social justice found its start in her earlier volunteer work with the Salvation Army, where she contributed to various ministries of a diverse urban church in the neighbourhood of Regent Park.

Sherri is passionate about Christian discipleship and the building of community, and in her spare time enjoys writing poetry, hiking, kayaking, and retreating to the rocks and pines of Georgian Bay.   Edit

St. Matthew the Apostle History

St. Matthew the Apostle Oriole Anglican Church was established in 1964 in the Don Mills/Sheppard area. This document profiles who we are, what we do, how we care for ourselves and others, the resources we draw upon, and our goals.

St. Matthew is located in the Henry Farm area of Willowdale, Toronto, west of the Don Mills Road and Sheppard Avenue intersection, and close to the Fairview Mall, one of Toronto’s largest shopping centres. The church is located in the centre of the huge high-rise building expansion along Shepherd Avenue. Major construction projects are ongoing in the Canadian Tire area (Concord Building) and at Parkway Forest, and the original ‘Anglo/Christian’ character of the local community is being replaced by an ethnically diverse and mainly un-churched population. This presents an enormous missional opportunity and an exciting challenge for St. Matthew.

St. Matthew is highly driven by outreach and missional projects and is one of the pilot parishes in the Missional Action Transformation process conducted by the Diocese where in the last four years we have undertaken a series of visioning exercises to determine the direction in which the parish should be moving. We were also one of the pilot parishes for the Our Faith Our Hope fundraising campaign of the Diocese. The parish is able to offer space to a number of licensees, most of which fall under our outreach and nurturing focus as a congregation.

Due to its prime location and the talents and strengths within the congregation, St. Matthew is both an established and influential parish within the York Mills Deanery.

The land on which we gather is the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee, and Anishinabek Nations, and the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation. This territory was the subject of the Dish-With-One-Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy and the Ojibwe and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. This territory is also covered by the Toronto Purchase. Today, Toronto is home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island.

We recognize the enduring presence of Indigenous peoples connected to and on this land. We are grateful for the opportunity to gather on this territory and work in this community, and we commit ourselves to the work of reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.
