St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church History
History of St. Philip the Apostle Parish
In September, 1982, Bishop Thomas Drury established the parish of St. Philip the Apostle to serve the needs of a newly-developed area of the south side of Corpus Christi. Property was purchased on Cimarron Road for the future parish. The new parish community, with only 35 families, began meeting at Corpus Christi Minor Seminary, and Father Domingo De Llano was appointed the first Pastor.
In 1983, Monsignor Leonard Pivonka was appointed Administrator of St. Philip's and under his leadership, the parish experienced its initial growth. In 1985, Bishop Gracida dedicated the community Life Center, a multi-purpose building made possible through a grant from the Kenedy Foundation. In 1985, Monsignor Pivonka was appointed Pastor, and in 1987, a second building was dedicated to be used as a parish hall and C.C.D. center. By this time, the parish has grown to 225 families. Between 1987 to 1993, St. Philip's grew at an average of sixty families per year, to a total of 650 families.
In 1991, Father Tom Mc Gettrick was appointed as the third Pastor of St. Philip's. Shortly afterwards, two events took place which gave significant direction to the parish. The Feasibility Committee did a comprehensive study of the parish, and indicated the need to have a new church building to meet the spiritual needs of the growing parish. Shortly afterwards, almost 200 parishioners participated in a Town Hall Meeting designed to pinpoint the needs of the parish and suggest how to meet these needs. As a result, a three-year pledge campaign was undertaken in September, 1992, to raise $650,000 to build a new church. The new church was designed by Cotten-Landreth Architects and construction began in 1995. The new church was completed and dedicated in February, 1997, by Bishop Rene Gracida.
The Parish of St. Philip's continues to grows and add facilities to accommodate the dimensions of our growing parish. Currently, a Youth Building and a Prayer Garden are under construction, to provide for the families of St. Philip's, which now number 1340.
In addition to the Pastors mentioned, St. Philip's has been greatly blessed with the services of four Parochial Vicars: Father Clyde Masterson, Father Randy Cain, Father John Wojtasczyk, and Father Randy Majek. Permanent Deacons Stanley Millsap, Roy Grassedonio, Bruce Aycock, Paul Gutting, and Garland Frazier have all served with distinction. Sister Suzanne Friedmann served as coordinator of hospital services. Sister Barbara Netek currently serves as the Director of Religious Education/Adult Faith Formation.
Finally, of course, thousands of men and women, young and old, have worshiped and served in countless ways, to make St. Philip's the caring Christian community it is today.
