Welcome to Tsena Commocko Baptist Church!
Tsena Commocko is an indian term that means “meeting house.” We are so glad that you have stopped by and are excited to meet with you during our Sunday morning service or Wednesday activities!
What We Believe
We believe in the inerrant Word of God as presented in the inspired Holy Scriptures. We believe that the Bible is the revelation of God to man. It is the way in which man can truly know God and His will for our lives. We believe that all mankind suffers from the curse of sin and has no hope for salvation from the penalty of that sin except by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that faith is a gift of grace from God, and that it can not be earned or purchased by any human means or agency. We believe that Jesus, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, came and lived upon the earth in the incarnate form of a man, and yet never sinned. We believe that He lived, was crucified, buried and rose again after 3 days. We believe that His death is the only acceptable payment for the sins of all who believe and surrender their lives to Him. We believe in the ordinance of Baptism by immersion as the clearest symbol of the death and rebirth necessary in each believer. We believe in the ordinance of the Lord’s Supper as we gather to remember the price which Christ paid for our lives and to look forward to His coming again. And our observance is open to all believers. We believe in the power, prominence and persistence of prayer. We believe in the Great Commission as given in Matthew 28:19-20; we are committed to work toward the fulfillment of that end. We believe in the autonomy of the local church as we continue to work and serve both our Lord and each other. We believe in the need for Christian fellowship, compassion and service to others. We believe that lasting joy, peace and assurance can only be found in Christ.

Tsena Commocko Baptist Church History
In 1920, a group of ladies from the First Baptist Church of Richmond, Va. and the Dover Baptist Association organized a Sunday School in a one room house near Windsor Shades, Va. This mission project among the Native American Indians in New Kent County was encouraged by Dr. George McDaniel, pastor of First Baptist Church and president of the Baptist General Association of Virginia.
On Sunday September 24, 1922, a new Indian Baptist church was organized with 16 charter members. The first pastor was Reverend L. H. Suddeth. The new group of believers chose the name “Tsena Commocko” as the name of the church. This name is an Indian term which means “Long House”, “Meeting House” or “Place of Ceremonies”.
The new congregation of believers was received as a member of the Dover Baptist Association at the 1923 Annual Meeting.
In 1927, the first all Indian Woman’s Missionary Union in Virginia was organized at Tsena Commocko. This organization served all of the Native American churches in the Dover Association.
On Sunday May 16, 1982, ground was broken for the current worship center at the intersection of US-60 and Tsena Road. The construction project lasted three years and required the tireless efforts of many of the congregation. On May 26, 1985 the members of Tsena Commocko Baptist meet and worshiped in the completed Sanctuary. This service was officiated by Reverend Paul Richmond.
