First Presbyterian Church History

Presbyterians came to Franconia, Pickens County, in the summer of 1836, when Thomas Morrow, a licentiate of Tombeckbee Presbytery, began preaching in a small school house near Mayerhoof's store. Scotch-Irish Presbyterians from Kershaw, Union and Chester districts in South Carolina met with Mr Morrow on May 20, 1837 to organize a church. The church had 32 charter members, 30 whites and 2 slaves, most of whom came from the Beaver Creek Church near Camden, South Carolina. Five elders were elected: John Hughes, John Sommerville, Archibald Hood, John Turnipseed and Abraham Turnipseed. Public worship was conducted under a brush arbor until the could construct a suitable building. The church was built, a cemetery enclosed and a cemetery provided for the slaves. It was called Oak Groove Presbyterian Church in the Tuscaloosa Presbytery, Synod of Alabama. Mr. Morrow remained as Stated Supply until 1844, during which time 100 new members were added to the roles during examination. Rev. Theodoare Sayre served as Stated Supply for a year, followed by Rev. James Somerville as Stated Supply and paster until March 1849. Rev Fields Bradshaw was pastor from March 1851 to June 1859. Between June 1859 and March 1860, a new building was constructed because of increased membership.
