Leader Bio:
Annie is a lifelong Presbyterian having been baptized, confirmed, and ordained at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Akron, Ohio. She sensed a call to ministry at a young age for the simple reason that she liked church and felt a call to give back to a world that had blessed her greatly. Her inkling for ministry led to summer internships as a camp counselor at a Presbyterian camp (definitely not her calling), a summer teaching Vacation Bible School in southeast Alaska (a beautiful place to visit), and two summers spent at a large church and a small church.
She received a Bachelor of Arts from Connecticut College with a major in Religious Studies where she studied fascinating topics like cults, Rastafarianism, the Holocaust, and faith and reason. Following college Annie began her studies at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary where she received her Masters of Divinity degree and met her husband, Rev. Terry Epling. They have 4 children who survived being “double PKs” (pastors’ kids) despite having to go to church on the rare years when Christmas falls on a Sunday. Annie received her Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, and prior to coming to First Presbyterian served as pastor of Faith Des Peres Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, Missouri for 18 years.
Annie is active in the Fort Wayne community, having served on the Mayor’s Commission for Police Reform and Racial Justice, and she currently serves on the Mayor’s Commission on Domestic Violence, Sexual Harassment, & Rape. She has a heart for many issues but chief among them are issues about women and justice.
Annie is proud to serve First Presbyterian. With its deep roots in Fort Wayne and its central place in the city, she cares deeply about seeking the heart of God in the heart of the city. She’s grateful the church is willing to get involved in the city, use its voice to advocate for the disenfranchised and marginalized, listen to her sometimes challenging sermons, and love God with all their heart, soul, strength and mind.
