The Reverend Alberto Ramirez began leading the Herscher United Methodist Church in July. He started his pastoral ministry in 1995 in his native country, Mexico, with his wife, Juanita.
Reverend Ramirez completed his undergraduate studies in theology and psychology in his home country. He graduated with honors with a Master’s in divinity from the Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary at Evanston Illinois. He did a concentration of pastoral care and counseling.
He pastored churches mainly in the state of Baja California for 13 years. In 2008, he and his family immigrated to the US to be in ministry with Hispanic/Latino communities in the north and west part of the state of Georgia.
In 2016, he accepted an assignment in the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist Church to pastor, for the first time, two English speaking congregations in the Momence and Grant Park area. A year later, a third congregation was added to the circuit, Nueva Jerusalen, Hispanic Ministry. From 2020-2024, Reverend Ramirez served Main St., UMC in Alton Illinois as directing Pastor.
Pastor Alberto dreams of a church, that practices love, justice, and mercy: a church that advocates for the most vulnerable, denounces the evil, and injustice in our society, a church where ALL would be welcomed and loved, and a church where people worship together, not only on Sundays, but with their lifestyles during the rest of the week.
Pastor Alberto has been married to Juanita for 33 years. They have two children, Berenice Mercado (Alan) and Alberto Israel Ramirez (Marissa). They have three grandchildren Vivian Carolina (9), Isabella Rose (3), and Isaac Israel (2). Reverend Ramirez likes landscaping, reading, and dancing, not professionally.
Alberto and Juanita are looking forward to partnering in ministry with the congregations of Herscher/Reddick/South Wilmington working together to build the kin-dom of God on the west side of I-57.
