What Miles Believe
Miles Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church
Miles Chapel C. M. E. Church is a part of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, formerly the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church, founded in 1870.
Miles Chapel believes the Bible is the God-inspired Word of God. The Holy Scripture contains all things necessary to salvation; so that whatever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man or woman.
Miles Chapel believes that the Scriptures teach there is but one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons, of one substance, and power: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost. God’s Son, Jesus Christ, was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life and died on the cross in payment of man’s sins, was raised from the dead on the third day and shall return to judge all men at the last day.
Miles Chapel believes that salvation is a free gift (Ephesians 2:8-9), given by God’s grace and received by faith. The Bible teaches that Baptism is not only a sign of profession and a mark of difference; but it is a sign of regeneration or the new birth and is symbolic of the believer’s identification with Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. Christ is the source of a believer’s salvation (1 Corinthians 15:1-5). The baptism of children is recognized in this church.
Miles Chapel believes that the Church is the “Bride of Christ” and the body of Christ. This local congregation is governed in accordance with the Doctrine and Discipline of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (see I Timothy 3). The mission and purpose of the church is to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and environmental needs of all people by spreading Christ’s liberating gospel through word and deed.
Miles Chapel believes that the Bible teaches that the Lord gives Christians, spiritual gifts, which enable them to serve in the local church (Ephesians 4:11-16).
Miles Chapel believes that as Christians we should be concerned with the total person. Thus Miles Chapel is committed to seek out and save the lost, and serve the needy through a continuing ministry of (1) preaching the gospel, (2) feeding the hungry, (3) clothing the naked, (4) cheering the fallen, (5) administering to the needs of those in prisons, hospitals, nursing homes, mental hospitals, senior citizens homes, and caring for the sick, the shut-in.
Miles Chapel C. M. E. Church was founded in 1904.

But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.

Leader Bio:
Rev. Ronald E. Daniels, Sr. is a pastor, teacher, evangelist, singer, and musician shaped for ministry. He was the eighth child born in the piney woods of East Texas in the city of Longview, to John L. and Edith Daniels. There was always something special about him and his twin brother, Donald, who is also a preacher. His parents were in their mid-forties when Edith gave birth to the twins. He and his brother as small children would pretend to preach standing on the front porch, using a brick pillar as the pulpit.
Many miraculous things have happened in his life to help him understand the calling in his life. He was born left-handed, and his father encouraged him to learn to write right-handed when he was seven. His father died the next year, but Ronald continued to write right-handed. Throughout school he would use both hands to write papers. When one hand would tire out, he would use the other hand. At the age of twenty-two he was in an automobile accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Within six months he was able to walk again, and because his daddy had encouraged him to write with his right hand, he was able to return to work, even with limited ability to use his left hand.
His experience in Swiss Avenue Rehabilitation Hospital in Dallas, Texas allowed him to see many miracles take place while he was learning to walk again. The experience in a wheelchair along with meeting so many patients there with testimonies was the turning point in his life. The experience in an alcohol rehab, and the traumatic experience of a divorce shaped his life for the ministry that God was preparing for him.
He was educated in the Longview Independent School District, at Ned E. Williams, Valley View Elementary, Forest Park Junior High, and Longview High School. His post-secondary education included Kilgore College where he received a license for Substance Abuse Counseling. He studied at the United Theological Seminary and Bible College at the extension campus in Dallas, TX under Rev. Dr. James Hill. Later attending Texas College in Tyler, Texas, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a minor in Religion. He received his Texas Teachers Certification from Region 7 in Kilgore, Texas. Along with the Holy Spirit, he thanks God for Dr. James Hill and Dr. Baker-Fletcher (dean of religious studies at TC, who received his doctorate from Harvard), for his deep knowledge and understanding of interpreting the Word of God. He received his Master’s in Education Administration from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. He is currently enrolled at the Interdenominational Theological Center via Phillips School of Theology completing his master's in divinity.
He has work experience at Texas Eastman Chemical Company where he operated the first Distributive Control System (DCS), a system that controlled the process for making polypropylene. He was instrumental in starting two polypropylene plants by writing Standard Operating Procedures. He has managed convenient stores, worked in a behavior hospital, and is currently working at Tyler High School teaching business in the Career and Technology Education Department.
Since accepting his call in the ministry in 1992, he has had the privilege of pastoring Christian Methodist Episcopal Churches at Mt. Zion-Carthage, Pleasant Hill-Leigh, Mt. Pleasant-Kilgore, Moses Chapel-Gilmer, Miles Memorial-Marshall, Starrville CME in Winona, Mt. Zion CME Church in Kilgore and currently Miles Chapel in Houston - all in Texas. He has been known as a people person, because of his undying love for people. Churches have called him a restorer, because of his ability to organize. He has been a musician in several churches that didn’t have musicians, allowing them to experience the full presence of the Holy Spirit.
Pastor Daniels is passionate about teaching faith and love, which are the central themes of the bible, and how to properly apply them in our everyday life. As Christians we are justified by faith, we must walk by faith, live by faith, and without faith it is impossible to please God. We are taught that we must love unconditionally, and we must master it to be successful in this life.
He is married to the former Maschell Bradford. He has five daughters and two sons, seven grandchildren, and currently lives in Longview, Texas.

Rev. Valencia E. Edner, Senior Pastor
1904 – Present
In 1904, Miles Chapel was organized in a small building on the banks of Buffalo Bayou on the north side of Houston; this spot is where the Prickley Rice Mill once stood.
Re. J.M. Jones was the first Pastor. His tenure was about three years. During this era Miles Chapel was demolished by fire and services were held in the home of Mother Drew in the 4500 block of Coke Street.
A few years later Rev. J. A. Hall was appointed Pastor and along with the membership built a small church at the corner of Waco and Coke Street. Two years later, a storm came and destroyed the church building and the members were once again worshipping in the home of Mother Drew on Coke Street.
At the setting of the Annual Conference Rev. Amos Cherry was sent to pastor Miles Chapel. Services were still held in the home of Mother Drew. Rev. Cherry pastored Miles Chapel for one year; afterwhich, he was transferred to the East Texas Conference.
The next Pastor sent to Miles was Re. A.H. Hughes. He bought a lot on Waco and Vernon Street and built a church there. At this location the church flourished for eighteen years.
In 1925 Rev. W.Q. Hunter was appointed Pastor. He served a double role as both Pastor and Presiding Elder. With just a faithful few under Rev. Hunter’s Leadership a new lot was purchased on the corner of Lyons Avenue and Waco Street. A building was erected and on January 1928 the membership entered their new church home.
Rev. J.H. Merrick was Miles Chapel’s full time Pastor. He pastored until 1942.
Rev. Curtis Brown came to Miles Chapel in 1942 and found a debt for the church mortgage. The mortgage was paid off and burned in 1943.
In 1947 under Rev. K.C. Phillips’ leadership, our first church parsonage was purchased and paid off in one year.
In 1950 Rev. C.N. Reed came to Miles as pastor and remodeled the inside and outside of the church with bricks, a new piano and new organ.
In 1960 Rev. B.J. Blount came to Pastor Miles Chapel. In March 1962 tragedy struck again and Miles was completely destroyed by fire. The Annual Conference was scheduled to open at Miles the second week in September 1964. Under Rev. Blunt’s leadership and the dedication of Miles’ members, the church was rebuilt before the conference convened. The building was complete with heat, air, and carpet and completely furnished.
In 1963 under Rev. R. B. Moody came to Pastor Miles. Rev. Moody determined the need for outside lights around the church and a church sign. Under Rev. Moody’s leadership, spiritual growth continued to be one of the church’s primary goals.
In 1969, under Rev. Willie Mays leadership, we celebrated another church mortgage being paid off and burned.
In 1970 under Rev. Aaron Bundage, a new educational wing was added to the church. This new education wing was named the Caddie B. McLemore building in honor of the great works of Brother Caddie B. McLemore, a faithful member and Trustee of the church. A fellowship hall with full kitchen facilities was also added to this structure. At the corner of Lyons and Solo Streets, Rev. Watts donated land to the church on which a parsonage was built during the second tenure of Rev. Aaron Bundage. Rev. Aaron Bundage served Miles Chapel for a total of 8 years.
Rev. C. Cowley served as the Pastor of Miles for a number of years.
Rev. Herbert Scott served as Pastor from 3 years.
Rev. K. Cain served as pastor for a number of years. Under Rev. Cain’s leadership a church van was purchased. He was instrumental in motivating young people and many confessed Christ under his leadership. He was a great Bible teacher and inspired many to attend night Bible study.
Rev. C. Webster served as Pastor for a number of years. Under his administration the Children’s church was built and became viable part of the church structure.
Rev. C. Johnson served as the Pastor and Presiding Elder for one year. Afterwhich, Rev. Johnson focused solely on the ministries of Miles Chapel. He served as Pastor of Miles for 4 years. During his tenure as pastor, Rev. Jonson established the furniture ministry and reestablished the 12 o’clock noonday Bible class, which continues strong today.
Rev. JJ “Thunderbolt” Jackson III was pastor of Miles Chapel for four years from August 2010 to July 2014. During his leadership, the administration of the church was brought up to standards. The payroll accounting, weekly reporting and all codes regarding the church were brought up to standard.
Rev. Valencia Edner, our current Pastor has completed a tremendous job in leading our church forward. Several of her accomplishments with the assistance of the congregation includes establishing; the 501C3 “Nehemiah Hands of Hope Ministry”, community ministries, a successful weekly prayer ministry. Most of all Rev. Edner has a vision for Miles Chapel to remain “Christ –Centered; Love Driven; Community focused; On fire for God.”
