Mount Olivet Baptist Church History
Our History
On a day in 1893, five founding members, who recognized the need for a church, gathered to construct their vision of creating a place of worship that would not only be accessible to the community but one whose foundation would be erected upon a sense of kindred spirit. After many heartfelt prayers this institution would later be known as Mount Olivet Baptist Church.
Devotion services were held at a storefront on Main Street, pastored by Reverend Henry Melvin Limas. As membership grew and the Holy Spirit moved, services were moved to a rented hall on Nelson Avenue. The visualization of our founding fathers and Reverend Limas' would soon come to fruition as seven succeeding pastors, armed with purpose; would build upon a dream and transform it into a reality. Mount Olivet Baptist church, founded on the belief of reconstructing and renewing minds through the teaching and preaching of the word of God had now become an integral force, and strong power in the community. Mount Olivet has always been acknowledged as a community outreach ministry.
Many revere Mount Olivet as a learning center, a home, a rock in the midst of storms and that stronghold amidst turbulent times. Overcoming challenges, adversities, and periods without a pastor, Mount Olivet remained community focused.
In addition to their commanding presence and captivating sermons; Carl B. Taylor, Reverend G. Franklin Wiggins, and Reverend Mark Churn, were celebrated for their community activism and outreach. Reverend Taylor was active in the Civil Rights era and organized peace marches. He was one of the first black men to be on the Peekskill School Board. Reverend Wiggins was regarded as a great humanitarian and leader; who built a legacy of discipleship.
During Reverend Wiggins' tenure the Mount Olivet Housing Corporation was formed. He was significant in giving to worthy causes including missions, education and excavation in Africa. Reverend Churn, Mount Olivet's 13th Pastor was an extraordinary teacher and youth organizer. Among his many accomplishments he is celebrated for transforming the praise and ministry experience at Mount Olivet to vibrant and relevant. Reverend Dr. Adolphus C. Lacey moved Mount Olivet forward with a sense of urgency, expounding on the ideas and principles of its predecessors. An intellectual, educator, innovator, and intergenerational ambassador, he consistently reminded God's people not forget from whence cometh their strength and to stay defiantly on the battlefield for the Lord.
Reverend Dr. Robert E. Young accepted the call to be 15th Pastor of Mount Olivet Baptist Church in April 2015. Under Pastor Young's divine leadership, Mount Olivet continues to move toward even greater levels of service, sacrifice and growth.
God continues to enlarge Mount Olivet's territory as Pastor and People reach out to the Peekskill community and beyond, forge new partnerships to better minister to our community and the world around us, tap into an expanding pool of resources and tend to wanting souls throughout Westchester County—including the poor, sick, wounded and afflicted.
Mount Olivet is church home to a multi-generational and multi-cultural people, that includes the young, old, black, white and brown. We are removing the obstacles to growth that exisit among God's people, enhancing our robust and beloved community, standing in the gap on issues that matter to the citizens of Peekskill and working for the greater good of all humankind.
If you're looking for a vibrant and progressive church home, we encourage you to explore and consider Mount Olivet Baptist Church.
