North Toronto Chinese Baptist Church Melville Mission History
Our Story
Our church was started by the Toronto Chinese Baptist Church (TCBC), which is a member church of the Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec (CBOQ) (Called The Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec—BCOQ at that time) as the Eastside Mission in June of 1974, when Chinese immigrants started to occupy the east end of the city. We met in rented spaces at the Temple Baptist Church at 14 Dewhurst Blvd.
After several years of God’s blessings and growth, the Eastside Mission became an independent church named the East Toronto Chinese Baptist Church (ETCBC) on January 26, 1980.
Seven years later, BCOQ gave us the gift of about half an acre of land next to the Yorkview Heights Baptist Church to erect our church building. Upon completion in November 1987, the church moved to our present location at 88 Finch Avenue West and was renamed the North Toronto Chinese Baptist Church (NTCBC).
Some members remained at the Temple Baptist Church site and formed the NTCBC East Side Mission. This mission church became an independent church named also The East Toronto Chinese Baptist Church (ETCBC) on January 5, 1991.
In February 1991, NTCBC was given a wonderful blessing from the Lord when we were able to purchase two adjacent properties at below market prices. This provided us a temporary solution for more spaces at that time and gave us the potential for subsequent expansion.
We had the joy of celebrating our 20th Anniversary of NTCBC in the year 2000. Shortly thereafter, by God’s grace, and following 10 months’ of construction, the two adjacent properties were demolished and a new addition to our church building was completed. We officially unveiled the new addition in the spring of 2002. With this expansion, our floor space almost doubled. Many more parking spaces were also added.
Mission Churches
In addition to the NTCBC East Side Mission that became the present ETCBC, our Lord has given NTCBC the privilege and honour of being involved in the planting of several other mission churches.
In 1983, a mission church was started in Brampton. It became the Brampton Chinese Baptist Church in 1986 as it matured to become independent. Those who participated in this planting have experienced the glory of the Lord and the joy of His guidance and providence.
In September 1992, the Pickering Chinese Baptist Church was established through the joint effort of the Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church and NTCBC. That church had become independent on Aug. 13, 2006 and was renamed the Pickering Community Baptist Church.
The Richmond Hill Mission (RHM) of NTCBC started its first worship service on Sept. 3, 1995 at Walter Scott Public School. Since then, they continue to experience the guidance, protection, care and provision of the Lord. In June, 2005 meetings were moved to rented spaces at Logos Baptist Church of Richmond Hill, at 75 Oxford Street.
After years of diligent searching, on Oct. 6, 2008, a historical church at 11248-11264 Kennedy Rd. (north of Elgin Mills Rd.), with an adjacent manse, was purchased as their permanent church site. Extensive renovations were undertaken to make it suitable for their uses. Inauguration ceremony was held on Nov. 15, 2009. The RHM was renamed Melville Mission (NTCBCMM), as it is no longer located in Richmond Hill. We trust that under the guidance and providence of our Lord, the MM will enter a new era of growth in grace and maturity.
