Who we are

Welcome to St. Brice’s Anglican Church!

St. Brices is St. Brice's is a vibrant Anglican Parish who want to know Christ and make Him known.

We are more than a beautiful church located in the heart of North Bay. We are a group of Christian people, rooted in an ancient tradition, striving to make the message of God’s love known and experienced in our present society. We are “Ambassadors for Christ” and we are called to bring God’s grace, love, and peace to everyone.

We gather together each Sunday to be nurtured by the scriptures, prayer, music, and the sacraments of bread and wine – food for our Christian journey. Throughout the week we participate in a variety of ministries to strengthen and care for one another as well as ministries to reach out and touch those in our wider society and the world.

We are a growing community of Christians of all ages, committed to sharing Jesus’ words of grace and hope. We offer a place of hospitality, healing, and love. Our worship services are uplifting, with relevant messages and glorious music.

It is our hope that you will find a spiritual home here; that you will feel God’s love through Jesus Christ in our worship, fellowship and common life together.
Grace and peace be with you always.

Leader Bio:
Peter Armstrong was born in Ontario in 1963, and grew up in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Following an undergraduate degree from the University of King’s College in Halifax, N.S., in 1985, he worked in England before discerning a call to ordination. Peter graduated with an M.Div. from Wycliffe College, Toronto, before being ordained in September 1989. After assisting in an Anglican parish in Liverpool, N.S., he went on to serve in the rural parish of New Germany, N.S. [1990-1997], St. Matthias’, Halifax, N.S. [1997-2006], and in a team ministry in northern Nova Scotia [A.C.P.C., 2006-2015], before accepting a call to serve currently as rector of St. Brice’s, North Bay, beginning in March 2015.

Peter earned a Doctorate of Ministry on the topic of “team ministry” in May 2015, from the Toronto School of Theology. Peter and his wife, Nancy, have two adult daughters. Peter likes the characterization of his theology as “generous orthodoxy.” While self-identifying generally within the evangelical tradition of Anglican Christianity, he is firmly committed to ecumenism and working within the wider Church.

Hobbies include reading, canoeing, and working on the family summer home in Nova Scotia.

St. Brice's Anglican Church History

St. Brice’s Church was founded in 1917, under the name of St. Simon, as a mission church of St. John’s Church in North Bay to meet the needs of members of the congregation who wished to attend services conducted in a higher church tradition. The new community thrived under the leadership of the first incumbent, the Rev. William Archer Hankison, and St. Simon’s became a separate parish in 1928.

In 1930 the original church building was sold. Construction of a new building started in 1932, financed with the help of a generous donation from the Rudd family in England. Until the new building was opened in 1933 services were held in the church hall. At this time the name was changed to St. Brice’s in accordance with the wishes of the Rudd family. This church is dedicated to St. Britius (St. Brice), in loving memory of William Ferris Rudd, Captain Royal Welsh Fusiliers, who fell, leading his men for King and Country, at Serre, in France, November 13th, 1916, at age 29. Also in loving memory of William Ferris Rudd’s father and mother. Twice each year the Rudd family is still remembered during the Sunday service.

Over the last thirty seven years the church complex has been enlarged and renovated. In 1976 a narthex was added to the front of the building. In 1987 a link was constructed between the narthex and the church hall. In 2001, the seating capacity in the main church was increased and the narthex and link to the hall were renovated. Recently, both the church and hall have undergone major renovations in order to comply with Fire Department Regulations. The church now has a narthex, offices, reading room, and a large church hall linked to the narthex.
