St Mary of the Angels History
This church was designed by Gillespie, Kidd and Coia and built in 1960. Prior to this temporary places were used for worship and a church was built in 1923. This was eventually replaced by the present church, which began with the creation of a fund in 1928. The new church is a flat-roofed L-shaped church and priest's house. It has variegated brick walls, with alternating bands of vertically and horizontally laid orange brickwork, enlivened with decorative soldier courses. There is a nave, with stepped buttresses along its east side, and a broad west aisle. The nave has a deep, continuously glazed clearstorey on the west side, while on the east side and aisle is a narrow band of glass running under the wallheads. The two-storey clergy house projects west from the south end of the church. The interior features clerestory windows, which sheds light on the balcony. There are natural brick walls, timber roof beams and solid pews in strong coloured shafts of light. The church is in good condition and in full ecclesiastical use. Researched and written by J. Dowling, 8/9/03 + 12/8/03.
