Who we are

Who We Are

The members and friends of Trinity welcome all persons, regardless of ethnic heritage and religious backgrounds.

The Church is a people created by God in Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, called and sent to bear witness to God's creative, redeeming, and sanctifying activity in the world.

Our Purpose

To participate in God's mission and spread His Word within the Topton community and beyond by: Worshipping God in proclamation of the Word and administration of the sacraments and through lives of prayer, praise, thanksgiving, witness, and service; Proclaim God's saving Gospel of justification by grace for Christ's sake through faith alone, according to the apostolic witness in the Holy Scripture, preserving and transmitting the Gospel Faithfully to future generations; Carry out Christ's Great Commission by reaching out to all people to bring them to faith in Christ and by doing all ministry with a global awareness consistent with the understanding of God as Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier of all; Serve in response to God's love to meet human needs, caring for the sick and the aged, advocating dignity and justice for all people, working for peace and reconciliation among the nations, and standing with the poor and powerless, and committing itself to their needs; Nurture its members in the Word of God so as to grow in faith and hope and love, to see daily life as the primary setting for the exercise of their Christian calling, and to use the gifts of the Spirit for their life together and for their calling in the world; and to manifest the unity given to the people of God by living together in the love of Christ and by joining with other Christians in prayer and action to express and preserve the unity which the Spirit gives.

Leader Bio:
Pastor Tom was born August 16, 1950 in York Pa. He graduated for Dallastown Area High School in 1968 and from York College of Pennsylvania in 1974, with a degree in Accounting. Then some 26 years later, Pastor Tom received his Master of Divinity degree from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, which is now a theological school of Lenoir Rhyne University.

But prior to graduating from seminary Pastor Tom married Elizabeth in 1995 and brought together a blended family with five children. Since that time those five children have started families and Tom and Liz are the proud grandparents of 13 grandchildren.

Pastor Tom's first call in ministry was in Clearfield Pa., at St. John Lutheran Church. While there he was involved with the youth, with community service as well as serving as a volunteer chaplain at the local hospital. In the fall of 2002, he was called to Angel of Joy Lutheran Church in Lufkin Texas. Angel of Joy had just come off mission status shortly before his arrival so, a large portion of his duties were pastoral guidance, both spiritually and administratively. Also during his stay there two hurricanes, Katrina and Rita, came to the area which affected his congregation. In the summer of 2006, Pastor Tom was called to Flohr's Lutheran Church. His vision there was to journey with them in discovering how God's Word was redefining their purpose and ministry within their community setting. Besides serving at Flohrs, Pastor Tom also serves the greater community. He was instrumental in starting a backpack Ministry for the local elementary school, that both feeds and clothes needy children. He has been involved in a cooperative interdenominational midweek youth group called Slice of Faith, a cooperative confirmation program of 10 churches with six pastors and 25 youth. He is also a member of Cashtown Lions club, and serves as an associate chaplain at Gettysburg hospital.

Pastor Tom enjoys music of all kinds, plays guitar whenever possible. He lives the out of doors, taking walks with Elizabeth and just being in the mountains.. He is a trout fisherman, and a diehard Atlanta Braves fan. He is an avid reader, has his own website, where he posts a daily devotional under www.revtommiedarr.com . His most favorite thing though is spending quality time with the love of his life Liz.

Trinity Lutheran Church History

History of Our Church

In 1865 to 1868 the religiously inclined people of the village of Topton and vicinity, including parts of Longswamp Township came to the conclusion that thier religious and church facilities were too remote and inconvenient. For this purpose seven persons gathered to organize a Sunday School. Thier place of meeting was on the second floor of a leather store.

After having to move twice due to the lack of space, in 1869, it was decided to erect an independent school building known as "Excelsior Subscription School." No school was ever held in the building, but it was used to house the Sunday School and later the church. Land at the corner of Cherry and Franklin Streets was donated and on October 29, 1871 the church was organized as St. Peter's Union Church, with Rev. A. J Herman as the Reformed pastor and Rev. B.E. Kramlich as the Lutheran pastor.

A congregational meeting of the Lutheran Church was held February 12, 1912. At this meeting a motion was made to apply for a charter to incorporate the congregation. Through the efforts of the Ladies' Mite Society, substantial sums were paid toward defraying expenses of the church. The cost of incorporation was $29.62, which was raised by general subscription. The date of incorporation was April 1, 1912 and the name changed to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.

The first Lutheran Choir was organized January 1914

The first meeting of the Lutheran Sunday School was held January 25th, there were 123 in attendance and the collection amounted to $8.52.

May 8, 1912 the congregation voted unanimously to buy a lot at the corner of Smith and Peach Streets (now Home Avenue). On February 23, 1915, in the presence of over a hundred people, the ground was broken for the building of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. The cornerstone was laid on June 13, 1915. About 400 people gathered for the service.

On September 24, 1916, the church was dedicated.
