I am glad you’re have stopped by to visit our website. I hope to share a few quick words with you about who I am and how this congregation and I can serve you. I was born in Northern Germany and grew up in West Berlin. My worldview and faith have been shaped by the context of post--War Europe. I studied theology in Berlin, Heidelberg, and Jerusalem, followed by doctoral studies in church history at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. Since graduating in 1997, I continued to avail myself of continuing-education learning opportunities. Most recently, I participated in the advanced level of pastoral leadership training at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Before joining Advent Lutheran Church, I worked in non-profit fundraising and hospital chaplaincy, served as pastor of two ELCA congregations in the San Francisco Bay Area, and taught as ELCA Global Mission staff in Hyderabad, India. In South San Francisco, I focused on reviving the congregation’s family ministry as well as developing hand-on services to hungry and homeless neighbors. In Cupertino, I focused on partnering with community organizations providing food and shelter to residents in need. In India, I taught Indian theology students and visiting international groups at a church-affiliated interfaith institute (Henry Martyn Institute). Over the years, I have also served the church in capacities beyond the congregational level – by serving on the leadership team of (what was then) Lutherans Concerned Bay Area, on the Sierra Pacific Synod Racial-Ethnic Ministries Discipling Team, as a member of the Sierra Pacific Synod Council, Finance Committee, and Executive Committee. I have also partnered with several Christian organizations in the Holy Land. Among others, I have participated in bringing a Palestinian Youth Dance group from Ramallah to the Bay Area, helped to organize the 2014 “Breaking Barriers to a Just Peace” conference in Sunnyvale, and supported other events by providing graphic design services. I am blessed by a wonderful partner in life, my husband Kumar, and two young-adult daughters. I love to discuss history and politics with our daughter Naomi or listen to our daughter Anna’s stories about college life in Minnesota under Covid-19 conditions. I also love doing art and craft projects, playing card and board games, watching British crime shows, playing with our two dogs, working in my family’s backyard farm, or traveling to far-away places. I love the description of pastors as “spiritual adventure guides” which I first heard from a pastor colleague. Like a whitewater rafting guide, I will keep you centered in the raft as we navigate rough waters and confront the challenges of the river. Each week we gather in the boat of worship, because we need one another. Together, we can build each other up in faith. Mostly, though, we gather as a community because we know that we need the hope, guidance, and peace which only our ultimate river guide, Jesus Christ, can provide. I am so glad you are visiting our website and hope that you will join us for online or (once it is safe again) in-person worship soon! TEL;TYPE=WORK,VOICE:(916) 966-7242 TEL;TYPE=WORK,FAX: N:Rev.
