Who we are
We are an interracial, inter-denominational and international congregation with members from places as diverse as the Sudan and Russia, with people of various educational backgrounds and occupations. In Christ Jesus we accept people because he has accepted us and we do this making no distinctions based on race, sex, ethnic origin, or income.
We strive to serve our Lord in the neighborhood where we are located. Our liturgy is traditional and our music, led by our accomplished organist from Moscow, tends to be classical. We often have baroque violin, oboe, harpsichord and special solos in our worship. We are a small congregation with a great love of God and we love to celebrate God's love.
We've enjoyed good relations with our neighbors; we host Korean and Russian Congregations, and have even had a Jewish temple use our worship space as well.
If you desire an inclusive congregation centered on the Gospel of Jesus Christ we bid you welcome!

Advent Lutheran Church History
Advent Gravesend Church dates back to 1655 and is the fourth oldest church in Brooklyn.
Dutch settlers founded a Reformed Church in the town of Gravesend, one of the six towns that made up what is now Brooklyn in the 17th century. The language of worship was Dutch until the first quarter of the 19th century. Many of Brooklyn's streets and Avenues are named after families who had been members of Gravesend Church, e.g., Stillwell Avenue, Emmons Avenue, Ryder Street, Lake Street, Van Siclan Street, and Cropsey Avenue.Gravesend Church remained a center of the rural Gravesend town for over two centuries.
Advent Lutheran Church was organized in the season of Advent in the year 1908. The present building was begun in 1909 and the worship space used today was dedicated in 1929. This congregation was at its' strongest in the 1930's. Pictures of the congregation in 1939 can be seen here. Advent Lutheran and Gravesend Reformed Churches federated on January 8, 1979 to form Advent Gravesend Church.
We minister today to the community as an interdenominational congregation.
God continues to lead us into the future.
