Who we are
The Little Church on the Corner doing BIG THINGS for God...
Asbury Church is a family of believers who share the vision of allowing the Light of Christ shine through us as we minister to others. Wr strive to be a beacon of hope, transforming lives by creating disciples of Christ. We adhere to the Three Simple Rules proclaimed by Methodism founder John Wesley: Do no harm, do good, and stay in love with God. We believe that regular prayer, Bible study, communal worship, and a heart of service are essential to the Christian experience.

The Atmosphere
Asbury welcomes everyone to full participation regardless of background or condition. Our services are casual. Some folks like to dress up, others not so much, Everyone is invited to join in.
Your Family
Asbury is a family of believers, and we believe a family should worship together. Children are welcome and encouraged to join their parents and caregivers in the main sanctuary for community worship.
The Preaching
Most weeks you will hear a sermon from Pastor Ivan James, but at times you’ll hear preaching from one of our lay speakers or an exciting guest. Sermons usually last 20 to 30 minutes and will feature Biblical teaching designed to lead you further into your journey of faith.
The Music
Singing together is an important part of worship. We sing a mixture of contemporary songs and classical and gospel hymns.

Asbury United Methodist Church History
It all began with Miss Macky....
In 1914, Miss Macky, a member of Union Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, began hosting a Sunday School class in her home. Over time, that class grew and eventually became known as The Edwardsville Mission, located at 2501 Goode.
In 1918, the Edwardsville Mission united with Bagnell Chapel MEC and later moved with Bagnell Chapel to a storefront location at 2501 N. Taylor. The Bagnell Chapel congregation voted to change its name to honor American Methodism pioneer Francis Asbury, and the chuch became known as Asbury Methodist Church. (The word "Episcopal" was removed by the denomination in 1939.)
Two years later, the church purchased the property at 4001 Maffitt, which had formerly been the home of Epworth Methodist Church. To celebrate its new home, the congregation marched from its old location on Taylor to the new building on Maffitt.
Finally, in 1968 the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church to form the United Methodist Church, and "the little church on the corner" officially became known as Asbury United Methodist Church.
Asbury UMC celebrated its 100th Anniversary with a special brunch on Saturday, November 13, 2014, and worship the following day with messages from our District Superintendent and our Conference Bishop. Here's to another 100 years of sharing the Gospel of Christ!

Help me to avoid every sin
Thanks to Thee, O God, that I have risen today, To the rising of this life itself; may it be to Thine own glory, O God of every gift, and to the glory, aid Thou my soul. With the aiding of Thine own mercy, even as I clothe my body with wool, cover Thou my soul with the shadow of Thy wing. Help me to avoid every sin, and the source of every sin to forsake, and as the mist scatters on the crest of the hills, may each ill haze clear from my soul, O God.
