What We Believe
16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God
1. The Scriptures are Inspired by God and declare His design and plan for mankind.
2. There is only One True God–revealed in three persons… Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (commonly known as the Trinity).
3. The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. As God’s son Jesus was both human and divine.
4. Though originally good, Man Willingly Fell to Sin–ushering evil and death, both physical and spiritual, into the world.
5. Every Person Can Have Restored Fellowship with God Through ‘Salvation’ (trusting Christ, through faith and repentance, to be our personal Savior). [1 of 4 cardinal doctrines of the AG]
6. We believe and practice two ordinances:
Water Baptism by Immersion after repenting of one’s sins and receiving Christ’s gift of salvation Holy Communion (the Lord’s Supper) as a symbolic remembrance of Christ’s suffering and death for our salvation
7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a Special Experience Following Salvation that empowers believers for witnessing and effective service, just as it did in New Testament times. [1 of 4 cardinal doctrines of the AG]
8. The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is ‘Speaking in Tongues,’ as experienced on the Day of Pentecost and referenced throughout Acts and the Epistles.
9. Sanctification Initially Occurs at Salvation and is not only a declaration that a believer is holy, but also a progressive lifelong process of separating from evil as believers continually draw closer to God and become more Christlike.
10. The Church has a Mission to seek and save all who are lost in sin. We believe ‘the Church’ is the Body of Christ and consists of the people who, throughout time, have accepted God’s offer of redemption (regardless of religious denomination) through the sacrificial death of His son Jesus Christ.
11. A Divinely Called and Scripturally Ordained Leadership Ministry Serves the Church. The Bible teaches that each of us under leadership must commit ourselves to reach others for Christ, to worship Him with other believers, and to build up or edify the body of believers–the Church.
12. Divine Healing of the Sick is a Privilege for Christians Today and is provided for in Christ’s atonement (His sacrificial death on the cross for our sins). [1 of 4 cardinal doctrines of the AG]
13. The Blessed Hope: when Jesus Raptures His Church Prior to His Return to Earth (the second coming). At this future moment in time all believers who have died will rise from their graves and will meet the Lord in the air, and Christians who are alive will be caught up with them, to be with the Lord forever. [1 of 4 cardinal doctrines of the AG]
14. The Millennial Reign of Christ when Jesus returns with His saints at His second coming and begins His benevolent rule over earth for 1,000 years. This millennial reign will bring the salvation of national Israel and the establishment of universal peace.
15. A Final Judgment Will Take Place for those who have rejected Christ. They will be judged for their sin and consigned to eternal punishment in a punishing lake of fire.
16. We believe and look forward to the perfect New Heavens and a New Earth that Christ is preparing for all people, of all time, who have accepted Him. We will live and dwell with Him there forever following His millennial reign on Earth. “And so shall we forever be with the Lord!”

Pastor Stephen leads our Influence Discipleship Track, oversees membership, preaches and leads in the contemporary service, ministers to college students and young adults, and serves as a chaplain at Springfield College. He grew up in the Midwest, where his dad pastored churches in Nebraska and Minnesota. He felt the call to pastor at a summer kids camp in Nebraska and God continued to refine that call over the years. He met his wife, Andrea, at church in Minnesota.
Upon graduating high school, He attended Central Bible College in Springfield, MO where he received a BA in Biblical Languages. Halfway through college, Andrea and Stephen were married. After graduating from Central Bible College, Stephen attended the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in Springfield, MO where he received an MDiv. with emphasis in expository preaching.
Immediately after graduating from seminary and as an answer to prayer, God led Pastor Stephen, Andrea, and their 18 month old daughter, Lailah, to Bethany. Now, they have three kids Lailah, Elias, and Titus. Stephen enjoys coffee, hiking, backpacking, reading, disc golf, and more coffee! Also, ice cream, with coffee of course! You can check out his blog at ruminatingreverend.wordpress.com.

Bethany Assembly of God History
Our roots go back to the year 1904-05 when Mabel Weaver, a consecrated servant of the Lord, built Peace Chapel at the corner of Springfield and Armory Streets in Springfield. It was an interdenominational work. Rev. A. B. Simpson, founder of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, dedicated it to the Lord’s work. This early heritage destined the influence of the church around the world.
In the year 1919 Bethany Fellowship Chapel, as it was then named, became affiliated with the New England District of the Assemblies of God. There was a succession of preachers who ministered in the “Chapel” in those early years.
In the year 1924, the church became incorporated under the name of Bethany Pentecostal Church. The ministry of the church continued to bear a great influence for God. In 1954 the church changed its name to Bethany Assembly of God to conform to the denominational name.
Under the blessing of God, the leadership of our Head, Jesus Christ, and the enabling of the Holy Spirit, the church has continued to enjoy spiritual and physical growth. In the Springfield location the church entered into at least three major building programs during which the seating capacity was enlarged from 120 to 560.
As the Bethany family sought to fulfill their mission in today’s world; i.e., to minister unto the Lord, to minister unto the Church, and to minister unto the world, the growth and ministry of the church necessitated that we make room for God to do more through this body of believers.
On May 12, 1976, the congregation overwhelmingly voted to purchase the fifty-one acres upon which we are now located. Ground was broken on November 8, 1980, and the cornerstone was laid on November 6, 1982. The first service was held on Easter Sunday, April 3, 1983, and it was dedicated to the glory of God on May 29, 1983.
Continued growth required a second building project on our present site. The facility focuses on the needs of our youth and children providing them with an auditorium, nursery, and classrooms. Ground was broken on March 16, 1997, and the addition was dedicated on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1998 for the furtherance of the Kingdom.
The successive ministries of the following pastors and, should Jesus tarry, the future pastors, unite to raise up a mighty standard in these last days:
Rev. H.T. Carpenter 1922-1939
Rev. Wm. Belbin 1939-1943
Rev. V. Fredrickson 1943-1944
Rev. F.D. Eide 1944-1949
Rev. A.D. Skymer 1949-1953
Rev. D.W. Flower 1953-1965
Rev. E.B. Berkey 1965-1990
