Who we are

The Bishop Stewart Memorial Church sits overlooking the village from the site of the original woodframe church, Holy Trinity, which was built in 1808 and was the first church built exclusively for Anglican worship in the Eastern Townships. Construction on the present church was started in 1880 with the laying of the cornerstone by William Bennet Bond, Bishop of Montreal. This church was built as a memorial to Rev. Charles James Stewart who was responsible for establishing 23 Anglican churches in the area and who later became the first bishop of Quebec.

This beautiful red brick is constructed in the neoGothic style with double levelled chamfered buttresses which reflect the solemnity and dignity of the building.

The beautiful stained glass east window portrays the Apostles’ Creed in its triple lancets. The many other stained glass windows, including a 12 foot diameter rose widow, are all memorials to parishioners who have been associated with this lovely old church throughout the years.

The church was designed by architect William Tutin Thomas, Montreal, for a fee of to $50. The pipeorgan was built by Sameul Russel Warren at the cost of $958 in 1869 and is one of the few remaining Warrens in Quebec.

A generous contribution from Miss Jane Reid, daughter of Rev. James Reid, was conditional on an agreement promising free seating for the faithful, which is the the reason we see chairs rather than the traditional church pews inside the church. A chapel was later installed in the basement to facilitate services during the cold winter months.

The power of Christian prayer Open our ears.
Blessed Lord, open our ears to hear what Thou speakest and our eyes to see as Thou seest. Give us hearts to beat in sympathy with Thine at the sight of every little child; and above all, our Lord, to understand and experience how surely and how blessedly Thou fulfilest Thy promise, "Whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me."
