Blackburn Church History
Blackburn Church….In 1811, a Methodist Bible class began meeting at a home in future Sewickley Heights. In 1830, the group purchased an acre of land for a burial ground and church. The price was fifty cents. A log church was built in 1833, but was replaced twenty years later with a brick structure under the direction of Rev. William P. Blackburn. Following a lightning strike and fire c1890, the building was deemed unsafe and was rebuilt on the same foundation, using many of the original beams.
Blackburn, like other country churches, was once the social center of the surrounding farming community. Membership numbers and the church’s importance in the community gradually declined, however, as family farms were replaced with the country estates of wealthy industrialists whose social focus was the newly built country club. Despite its small numbers, Blackburn continues to provide a church home to area families, as it has for nearly 200 years.
The parking area opposite the church was once the location of the one-room Blackburn School that closed in 1950 when students were transferred to the Edgeworth School.

Open our ears.
Blessed Lord, open our ears to hear what Thou speakest and our eyes to see as Thou seest. Give us hearts to beat in sympathy with Thine at the sight of every little child; and above all, our Lord, to understand and experience how surely and how blessedly Thou fulfilest Thy promise, "Whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me."
