Burlington Foursquare Church History
When Pastor Sam and Gwen Fratt came to the Burlington Foursquare Gospel Church in October of 1985, the congregation was about 6 people. The building, located at 400 S. Woodlawn and originally constructed in 1888 as the First Swedish Baptist Church, was purchased by the Foursquare Church in July of 1959. It was a beautiful split-level brick structure with stained glass windows and a steeple, but by 1993 it was clear we needed to start planning for a larger building.
By the spring of 2002, we had a little over $20,000.00 in the Building Fund and had already begun looking at buildings and properties in the Burlington/West Burlington area. That summer, the Lord directed our attention to a piece of hilltop property on which the owner had just recently reduced the price. It was perfect, and we were able to purchase it without a loan.
We realized that it would be difficult to sell our current church building and parsonage, since church buildings were not known to sell very quickly. In fact, our realtor and several other pastors advised us that we could be in for a long wait. The decision was made that if there was an offer, we would take that opportunity to go ahead and sell - even if it meant having to meet in different locations until a new building could be purchased or built. We had the properties appraised and started praying for a buyer.
Around that time, the Burlington Community School District had decided to expand one of the middle schools, but their plans required the aquisition of some property owned and used by another small church. When Pastor Sam saw the article in the local newspaper, he contacted the pastor of that church and asked if they might be interested in relocating into our building. He and his congregation liked the idea and took the proposal to the school board. After several meetings and negotiations, the school district agreed to purchase our church building and parsonage and give it to them in exchange for their property. Unaware of the value the realtor had placed on our properties, the school board offered us a figure that nearly matched the appraisal! On May 1st, 2003, we received the check and moved out of the building that had been Burlington Foursquare Gospel Church for over 44 years.
From there we met in various schools until the fall of 2003, at which time we were given permission to use an elementary school building that had been closed several years prior and was being used for storage. What a blessing that was! We knew that our time there would be limited though, because the school district wanted to either sell the old school, or lock it up and shut off all the utilities.
In July of 2002, we had already started working with a contractor to begin drawing up the plans for our new church building. In August of 2003 we held our groundbreaking ceremony and construction began the following month.
On Easter Sunday, March 27, 2005, we held our first service at the new Burlington Foursquare Gospel Church Building with 136 people in attendance.

Open our ears.
Blessed Lord, open our ears to hear what Thou speakest and our eyes to see as Thou seest. Give us hearts to beat in sympathy with Thine at the sight of every little child; and above all, our Lord, to understand and experience how surely and how blessedly Thou fulfilest Thy promise, "Whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me."
