Calvary Presbyterian Church History
History of Calvary Presbyterian Church (USA)
Calvary Presbyterian Church (USA) was organized in 1867, shortly after the Civil War, under the auspices of the Freedman’s Board of the Presbyterian Church (USA). The Rev. Willard Richardson, the first pastor of Calvary, was sent from the north to establish a school and a church. The church was named Calvary. The school was named after its founder, the Rev. Willard Richardson. Two of the early founders of Calvary were Ed Henry and Lazarus Johnson. Early trustees were Jesse P. Lyles, Charles R. Russell, and George McDill.
The present sanctuary at 311 South Vanderhorst Street was erected in 1870. Eighty-five years after Winnsboro was chartered as a town (1785). In 1980, the church was remodeled inside and out. In 1993, under the leadership of Pastor Danny C. Murphy, a 2,450 square foot Christian Education Center was built to meet the needs of the growing congregation. The outward appearance of the Christian Education Center spoke silently but powerfully to the outside world about the internal convictions. Then in 2007, under the leadership of Pastor Gloria William, the Community Outreach Center was purchased.
Although the session of the church has both male and female members, it was not until 1962 that Calvary ordained its first women elders: namely, Mrs. Lottie Howard and Miss Virginia L. Roseborough.
Since the leadership of the Rev. Richardson, Calvary has been served by sixteen pastors throughout her history. Pastors succeeding Rev. Richardson were: Reverends J. C. Watkins, L. D. Davis, J. A. Tillma, J. Jackson, M. J. Jackson, Elijah Gregg, M. T. Wash, A. U. Fryson, G. M. Ulmer, W. Talley, R. G. Toatley, (1946-57), Rev. Dr. J. H. Hudson (1957-85), Rev. Dr. D. C. Murphy, Sr. 1985-99), Rev. Gloria Williams, who was the first female pastor of the church, and Rev. Dr. Hezekiah Corppetts (2007-2013).
Since Calvary’s inception, great emphasis has been placed on the spiritual growth and development of adults and youth through the Church School, and Vacation Bible School. In fact, during the early years, Calvary was a pioneer in Vacation Bible School and served not only its youth but the young people of the community.
At Calvary our goal is to be a responsive body of believers who profess a working faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, proclaim the Good News in word and deed, and provide spiritual nourishment for all God’s people. Our vision is to grow a church for Jesus Christ where people join hands to help others to the glory of God.
