Leader Bio:
When Yvette D. Massey was licensed into the gospel ministry in 1997, she had already earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from ClemsonUniversity and was ministering as a registered nurse. However, she sought to minister in a more holistic manner, so she entered the Morehouse School of Religion of the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia. There she was involved in various student organizations, including the Morehouse School of Religion Baptist Fellowship, and the International Society of Theta Phi, a theological honor society, of which she soon became president. She was a Ford Foundation Fellow during her seminary years and in 2000 she graduated with a Master of Divinity.

Reverend Massey has a passion for the people of God, and her mission is ‘To Reach the Outcast for Christ’. She believes that parish ministry and community ministry go hand in hand. She has an affiliation with the following organizations: the Atlanta Suburban Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma, Theta, Inc., Community Advisory Board Chair for the Center for Cancer Research & Therapeutic Development (CCRTD) at CAU (2008-2010), a member of the Fire Foundation Board (2008-2010), and a Trustee for the UM Children’s home. She is the recipient of many honors and awards. She was also selected by the African American Pulpit magazine (2005) as one of the twenty outstanding young African American ministers under the age of forty who are playing a major role in helping to shape the future direction of the African American Church. Her sermon entitled “The Deciding Vote” was published in the magazine in November 2005. Rev. Massey has also hosted her own television talk show, entitled “Bible Talk,” which aired on Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters (AIB) and she is a much sought after preacher and teacher.

In 2001 Rev. Massey was ordained at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Pendleton, S.C., and in June of 2005, she was ordained an Elder in full connection in the North Georgia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. She has participated on the following conference committees: The Council on Finance and Administration (Secretary), History and Archives, The United Methodist Children’s Home (Trustee) and most recently the Board of Ordained Ministry. District activities include the District Committee on Superintendence and District Committee on Finance and Administration. She also served as the president of the North Georgia Conference Black Clergy Women’s Organization over which she was president.

Reverend Massey was previously the Senior Associate Pastor at Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. She has also served as the senior pastor of Warren Memorial United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia until October 16, 2010. During her tenure she led Warren Memorial to implement monthly community outreach activities. On October 17, 2010 Reverend Massey began her appointment as Senior Pastor of Red Oak United Methodist Church in Stockbridge, Georgia. Under her leadership the church experienced significant growth and she lead them in planning for a third worship service, “Praise in the Middle”.

As of June 20, 2013, Rev. Massey began a new journey as the first female pastor of the historic Central United Methodist Church. To God be the Glory!   Edit

Central United Methodist Church History

Central United Methodist Church was founded in 1866 as Clark Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church. The church was named for Bishop Davis W. Clark, who became bishop in 1864 and was the first President of the Freedmen’s Aid Society. The first location of the church was on Frasier Street in the Summerhill Section of Atlanta. Because the building was painted a deep red, people in the community commonly called Clark Chapel the “Little Red Church.”

In 1876 Clark Chapel moved to a new facility on Hunter and Central Avenue. The Clark Chapel congregation witnessed the inauguration of Clark University and Gammon Theological Seminary, and feels great honor in having played a part in the organization of these notable institutions. Some of the classes for the schools assembled in the basement of the old Lloyd Street Church.

Some of the most progressive and aggressive movements for the racial equality were engendered by and through Central. The church helped mold the civic and religious character of Atlanta as the city evolved into the southeast’s leader educationally and industrially, as well as the hub for civil rights activism.

Central has a storied history and continues its legacy of religious, civic, moral, and educational leadership.

The power of Christian prayer When we stumble...
O Lord our God, Who has called us to serve You in the midst of the world's affairs, When we stumble, hold us; when we fall, lift us up. When we are hard pressed with evil, deliver us. When we turn from what is good, turn us back and bring us at last to Your glory.
