Welcome to Cephas Christian Reformed Church
We believe that the Bible, both the Old Testament and the New Testament, is the inspired Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and life. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, sent to redeem the world; we love and trust Him as the one who saves us from our sin; and with repentance and joy we embrace Him as Lord of our life.
We are a confessional church, one that adheres to the three standards of faith: the Heidelberg Catechism, the Belgic Confession, and the Canons of Dort.
Our name, "Cephas," means "rock," and it was the name given to Simon, one of Jesus' disciples. Our Lord said to him, "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:18, NIV)

Cephas CRC History
The Christian Reformed Church in Peterborough held its first service on October 7, 1951, at the Peterborough YMCA on George Street. The church was officially instituted on February 28, 1952. The membership then consisted of 17 families, but it grew steadily. By November 1952, the church had begun conducting services in English as well as Dutch; services would be led alternately in both languages until 1967. The church purchased a basement building on George Street in 1955. Our first full-time minister, Rev. Hart, came to Peterborough from Wallaceburg in 1958.
In 1960, a lot was purchased on Goodfellow Road, where our present church building was completed two years later. That same year, the church adopted the name "Cephas." The congregation continued to grow, and in 1993, a group of 38 families left to form Living Hope CRC, which continues to flourish today. Meanwhile, our church building has recently been throughly renovated, and Cephas remains a vibrant, active church, with a membership of 116 families as of 2008.
Throughout its history, Cephas has been blessed with many dedicated and gifted pastors. Our former ministers are as follows . . . 1952 – 1957 Rev. Herman Moes 1958 – 1967 Rev. Klaas Hart 1967 – 1971 Rev. Henry Numan 1972 – 1978 Rev. Dick C. Los 1979 – 1988 Rev. Harry Mennega 1989 – 1993 Rev. James Poelman 1995 – 2005 Rev. Dr. William T. Koopmans 2007 – 2015 Rev. Ken Ritsema
In addition, Rev. P. Mantel served from 1974 to 1979 as our Associate Pastor and as a Chaplain for Millbrook Penitentiary, and Mr. Allan Kleine-Deters served from 1987 to 1991 as our Director of Youth, Education, and Evangelism.
Finally, the late Rev. Gerrit Heersink – a retired pastor who, with his wife Iefke, moved to Peterborough in the early 1990s – graciously accepted the tasks of preaching, teaching and pastoral care during our two most recent vacancies.
