Christ Episcopal Church History
Christ Church, Delaware City is located 5 blocks from the Delaware River.
The first Chesapeake & Delaware Canal opened in 1829 and ran through the City. With the Canal, ships could run from Philadelphia to Baltimore; people bought land as they thought that Delaware City would became a big city. Many buildings were being built and Christ Church was one.
The church was officially organized on May 28, 1848 and the church was built from 1849-1851. It is thought that Christ Church was patterned after the floating Church of the Redeemer as both churches share several and significant similarities especially with the Gothic Revival style.
The floating church was launched January 11, 1849 from Philadelphia and it began to minister to seamen in the Delaware River. In 1927 a new canal opened; unfortunately, the entrance to the canal was 2 miles south of the City. The boats passed by Delaware City, building stopped, and people left.
The church lost wealthy people and their money. How did the church survive? The congregation did much of the work, the Diocese paid for priests, and maintenance of the buildings was small.
Today, we still are a working congregation, we have been paying for a part-time pastor, and we have been fixing the buildings. We thank the A&D for their loans.

Light of the World
Jesus, the Light of the World, as we celebrate your birth... may we begin to see the world in the light of understanding you give us. As you chose the lowly, the outcasts, and the poor to receive the greatest news the world had ever known, so may we worship you in meekness of heart. May we also remember our brothers and sisters less fortunate than ourselves in this season of giving. Amen.
