Who we are
St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church started in the original location of Port Alice. Fr. Ed Fontaine was the full-time pastor of St. Theresa’s when in 1968 the original Port Alice moved to a new location, which is now called the Town of Port Alice. The Catholic community, instead of constructing a new church, joined the United Anglican Church in building a new Ecumenical Church under the title St. John’s Ecumenical Church. Since the completion of this one-of-a-lind Ecumenical Church in the North Island, the Catholic community has been using St. John’s Ecumenical Church building, but they keep the name of St. Theresa’s Church, not only to continue to ask the guidance and protection of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, but also to maintain the Catholic character of the community.
The original Port Alice location is now developed into a golf course near the Pulp Mill. The Mill has been the economic backbone of the community providing jobs for the residents of Port Alice and the neighboring towns since 1927. Today, St. Theresa’s Church is still active and alive because of the many men and women in the past and in the present who continue to devote their time, talent and treasure for the sake of the Kingdom of God. The next time you visit Port Alice, come and join us in our worship and fellowship.
