Who we are

Church of the Good Shepherd, UCC is a dynamic congregation with a rich history and an exciting ministry in the community. We are proud to be part of the United Church of Christ (UCC). We are a community of believers. We believe that together in fellowship we grow closer to God and one another. The bible speaks about iron sharpening iron. We believe that together we grow stronger.

We highly value our relationships with one another. We look to grow through fellowship, and ultimately growing closer to God. We value the word of God, and the leadership of the Holy Spirit. We look to extend grace to all of the lost and broken, and lead those with no hope to the hope of Jesus Christ.

We strive to be a church without walls. Jesus calls for us to go outside the walls to reach the lost and the broken. It is there that the lost will be found. Most churches find it is comfortable to stay within the walls, but we make it an effort to be like the church from the book of Acts, to see our city changed.

Church of the Good Shepherd UCC Q&A

Question: Where are you located?

Answer: We're located in the NE Heights area of Albuquerque just off Tramway Blvd. between San Antonio and Paseo del Norte.

Turn left off Tramway at the light at Tramway Terrace. Go 1 block and turn right onto Tennyson. We're at the end of the street on your right. 7834 Tennyson NE, Albuquerque, NM 87122.

Question: What time is service?

Answer: We currently offer one service each Sunday at 11:00 AM. Our Contemporary Theology Group meets at 9:30 AM. Worship is held in our beautiful Sanctuary. Masks are optional. You may also join us for live worship via Zoom or Live Stream on our Facebook page.

Our worship services include prayers and liturgy associated with a “traditional” worship service. On the first Sunday of each month, we celebrate Communion, open to all who wish to participate. We have an amazing music department that shines. Music includes an organ, piano, a bass choir, a treble choir, a mixed choir of 35+ voices, a bell choir, and small ensembles. We regularly feature special music from guest soloists and groups. As worship services go, this service may still be more informal than many have attended.

Question: Where do I park?

Answer: We have reserved parking spaces for new visitors directly in front of the church. It's a short walk to the entrance, where you will be warmly greeted and assisted by one of our Ushers.

We are here to serve you and offer an extragavent welcome, however, we want to make sure you are comfortable, so nothing will be expected of you.

Question: Is there something for my kids?

Answer: We love and honor children, and they are welcome at all services; we have bags with coloring, books, and toys for children who stay in worship.

If your child is comfortable attending Sunday school, we'll take you and your child to meet the teacher and get your child registered. Professional childcare for children 5 and under is also provided from 9:45 am – 12:15 pm.

Question: What can I expect at a worship service?

Answer: We dress casually and greet new and regular worshipers alike, with warmth and kindness. We strive to create a joyful, safe, and welcoming environment in worship and every aspect of our church life. We laugh a lot! We honor God with beautiful music from many cultures and languages. In preaching, our pastor seeks to be comforting, challenging, thought-provoking and inspirational.

Pastor Sarah has served in a wide variety of settings, including as a translator in Mexico and Nicaragua for Westminster Fellowship and a teacher with the Jesuit Volunteers in Pohnpei, Micronesia. She grew up attending a Presbyterian Church in Dallas, TX and Tokyo Union Church in Tokyo, Japan. She discovered the United Church of Christ while in College at Duke University.

Prior to her pastoral call to Church of the Good Shepherd, she served in pastoral roles in the Northern California and Rhode Island Conferences. She recently stepped down as Moderator of the Southwest Conference and now serves on the Committee on Ministry, Section A. She is also a member of PEO, Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority Inc, and the Albuquerque NAACP.

Pastor Sarah is an avid outdoors woman and when time permits, you'll find her rock climbing or hiking. She also enjoys leatherworking, sewing, and beading.

Church of the Good Shepherd UCC History

Our History

2023 marks our 64th year! Chartered in 1959, Church of the Good Shepherd was founded in the early days of the United Church of Christ. Hallmarks of our life and ministry are marked by the creation of a strong music program, children’s and adult education and service in the community.

UCC National History

Since 1957, the United Church of Christ has been the church of firsts, weaving God’s message of hope and extravagant welcome with action for justice and peace. Together, we live out our faith in ways that effect change in our communities. And so we were the first historically white denomination to ordain an African-American, the first to ordain a woman, the first to ordain an openly gay man, and the first Christian church to affirm the right of same-gender couples to marry. We were at the forefront of the anti-slavery movement and the Civil Rights movement. Our response to the demands of our faith is woven into the history of our country.
