Who we are
Conway Road Methodist Church
A friendly place, with a warm welcome, where people gather to worship, share and learn – a Church looking to live and serve within its local community.
At Conway Road Methodist Church you will receive a warm welcome both at our Sunday services and all our community activities. We are always delighted to see new faces and love to see our beautiful Church building used as much as possible within the local community.
Our worship is generally traditional in style and reflects our Methodist roots in hymn singing which express our faith through music.
Morning worship may be led by either a minister or lay preacher who bring a variety of styles and experience. There is the opportunity to meet people, chat and enjoy fellowship together afterwards over tea and coffee.
Evening worship is generally led by a minister and tends to be a gentler, more reflective time, held in the New Room rather than the main Church.
Both times of worship offer the opportunity to talk to the minister or other people afterwards.

Paul has been a Methodist minister for thirteen years serving in Bideford, Nottingham and now in Cardiff. He has also worked as a lay pastor on the Isle of Man. He is married to Andrea who tries to keep him on the straight and narrow. They have two adult children who are living with them although beginning to look for means of escape. Paul is obsessed with sports although his playing achievements are minimal. He is interested deeply in interfaith issues and justice/peace concerns. He also relates his faith to social activism.

Conway Road Methodist Church History
Conway Road Methodist Church has occupied its present site at the junction of Conway Rd and Romilly Crescent in Canton since 1869 and is now designated a building of historic and architectural interest (Grade 2). It has a glorious past but like most churches is now suffering from declining membership and attendance. In the heady days of the 19th Century growth of population in Cardiff a group of Methodist families were challenged to move from the docks and set up a church in Canton.
Their first building, now the Gospel Hall next to Llandaff Road and Romilly Road junction was soon too small for the numbers attending. So they built the present church, eventually seating 1100 people, in nine months opening on 1st December 1869. Soon a purpose built Sunday School was constructed opposite (now the site of the Glas apartments) which attracted hundreds of children and in the 1930’s required 100 teachers each Sunday.
The Church owned land in Fairwater for its own sports grounds, tennis courts etc and they used to hire double deck buses from the Council to take children up to Fairwater for their Sunday School treats!
It is a fine and imposing part of the Conway Rd Conservation Area and because of this the congregation wants to retain it and make it play a greater part in the life of the community of Pontcanna and Riverside. It is well used by the Community already providing a home to the Radnor Rascals After School Club each schoolday and lunches for those who live on the streets each Monday.
There is a thriving Toddler Group on a Tuesday morning and a Strength and Balance Exercise Class for the over 50’s on Wednesdays. Most evenings there is a dance or pilates class.
A Wednesday Group for the 50+ members of the local community was set up in January 2014 and is proving very attractive to a wide range of local people . The Group attracts people of all faiths or no faith and offers a range of interesting presentations of a very high standard on many aspects of faith, culture and general interest.
It is intended that the Church will continue to provide a focus for the community for many more years to come.
