Drumbo Baptist Church History
A Brief Overview of the History of Drumbo Baptist Church
The earliest congregation that contributed to the history of our congregation was First Blenheim Church, founded in 1828. The hamlet of Wolverton was named in honour of Enos Wolverton, member of a prominent Baptist family. The Baptist church there came into being in 1852, worship continuing until the fellowship amalgamated with Drumbo in 1964. In 1853, a congregation organized at Windfall, close to the current 401, west of town. A few years later, circa 1860, that congregation built a frame building in Drumbo.
In terms of the spiritual history of our province, these groups formed in the era of “infill”. That is, they came into being only after congregations were established in larger cities and towns. Once broad coverage of the province occurred, churches were formed in smaller communities in between, making sure no area was left out.
The current building was erected in 1876. The opening service was so well attended it was standing room only!
Surnames of our pastors include: Pickle, Booker, Patten, Fitch, Haviland, Hazelton, Pengelly, Leheigh, Stobo, LaFlair, Harris, Clifton, Trickey, Johnston, McLaren, Robertson, Forsythe, Anderson, Massecar, Von Keitz, Habermehl, Hillmer, Dozois, Brassard, Davidson, Russell, Barlow, Caswell and Hawkins.
One name stands out for historians: Edward John Stobo, Jr. A rising star in the Convention, he was disabled by a stroke while pastor in Hespeler, dying in 1922. One of 8 Canadian contributors to “The Fundamentals”, he was an irenic soul, representing the calmer, more outward-looking side of Fundamentalism. This movement became known in the 1940s and 1950s as Evangelicalism.
Like members of many village churches, those of Drumbo Baptist served quietly and faithfully as improvements in transportation made it easier to drive long distances to worship. A number of factors, including an aging building, cast a shadow over the fellowship. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the COVID19 pandemic.
Prepared by the Rev. Prof. C-Mark Steinacher, Pastor.

Light of the World
Jesus, the Light of the World, as we celebrate your birth... may we begin to see the world in the light of understanding you give us. As you chose the lowly, the outcasts, and the poor to receive the greatest news the world had ever known, so may we worship you in meekness of heart. May we also remember our brothers and sisters less fortunate than ourselves in this season of giving. Amen.
