Who we are

Elmira Mennonite Church

Mission Statement

As a congregation, we gather to worship God, to teach and to nurture each other in the Anabaptist faith, with openness to the Holy Spirit’s leading.

As a people, we scatter to witness and to serve in ways that demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ, to give hope in our community and work for peace in our world.

History

Elmira Mennonite Church was organized as a congregation of the Mennonite Conference of Ontario on August 31, 1924. Most of the charter members of the congregation had been members of the Floradale Mennonite Church. Our congregation is now a member of the Mennonite Church of Eastern Canada and Mennonite Church Canada.

The original structure was built in 1924. In 1955, an educational wing was added. An entrance with ramps, new washrooms, and a new kitchen, as well as library and classroom space were all included in the 1976 addition. In 1992, some alterations in the church basement and re-decorating the entire building resulted in an attractive and functional facility for our congregation’s activities. An extensive renovation in 2009 provided welcoming and functional office space in addition to a combined adult and children’s library, refreshed classrooms and deliberate storage. In 2011 a basement renovation was undertaken; in-floor heating was installed and acoustic tile was added to the ceiling. Most recently a lift was installed allowing those with mobility issues a greater degree of independence in navigating between the levels of the church building.

Leader Bio:
Having grown up in Elmira, I am so thankful for my home congregation of Zion Mennonite Fellowship where my faith was nurtured and participation in the congregation was encouraged. Since beginning as Elmira Mennonite Church’s Youth Worker in 2012, I have appreciated the support and encouragement of the EMC family to explore ministry and respond to the call to accept greater responsibility. The winding road that led me to accept the call to serve as pastor at Elmira Mennonite Church includes studying Wildlife Biology at University of Guelph, working on a chicken farm, and completing a Masters of Theological Studies at Conrad Grebel University College.

I am grateful for the warm welcomed extended to my wife, Laura Jane, before and since our marriage in 2017.

I love exploring the natural world, dabbling in beekeeping, and, along with my wife, caring for our rented farmhouse property. My relationship with God continues to be enriched by the intersection between faith and creation. I’m fascinated by the Biblical character Elisha. Maybe it is his boldness, or perhaps the unexpected stories where God acts in powerful ways in the ins-and-outs of daily life. Through those stories, I am challenged to be alert to the movement of the Spirit in the everyday.   Edit

Elmira Mennonite Church History

Elmira Mennonite Church in Elmira, Ontario, Canada was organized on 31 August 1924, and occupied its first building the same year. Oliver D. Snider is considered the founding leader of the group and served as pastor for the first 12 years. Abraham Gingrich served as bishop during the first years of the congregation's existence. The congregation originated through church planting from the Floradale Mennonite Church.

The original structure was built in 1924. In 1955, an educational wing was added, and in 1976 an entrance with ramps, new washrooms, and a new kitchen, as well as library and classroom space were added. Additional alterations were carried out in 1992, 2009, and 2011.

Elmira is a parent church to Bethel Mennonite at Elora (1947), Hawkesville Mennonite (1950) and Zion Mennonite Fellowship (Elmira) (1987).

The power of Christian prayer Teach us to serve Thee
Teach us, good Lord, to serve Thee more faithfully; to give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil and not to seek for rest; to labour and not to ask for any reward, save that of knowing that we do Thy will, O Lord our God.
