Who we are
“First Avenue Presbyterian Church is a loving Christian family embracing and uplifting all of God’s children.”
We have been serving the Denver community since 1887.
We Believe
That God is the creator and Lord of the Universe.
That men and women are created by God in His image to glorify Him and enjoy Him forever. By following His plan, people are called to tend His world, living as sisters and brothers in peace and love.
That the Bible is God's book to us which He produced by inspiring holy people. As we read it, we find it to be His infallible rule of faith and practice.
That Jesus Christ is the Son of God - God's Living Word, who expressed in human terms who God is. We believe that everyone who receives Him discovers peace with God through forgiveness of sin and the hope of eternal life.
John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life."
That the Holy Spirit is the unseen Enabler of God who continues the life work of Christ in believers.
That the Church is Christ's body and is present wherever believers are drawn together. Through worship, teaching, fellowship and service, believers are strengthened in Him and non-believers are drawn to Him.
That the greatest single force in the life of the church is Christ's love expressed through His people.
I John 4:19
"We love, because He first loved us."

First Avenue Presbyterian Church History
From 1887 to 1889, a Sunday School class was held in a wood frame building owned by the Rev. Henry S. Bainton on Broadway, south of the City of Denver. On February 6, 1889, The Church of the Redeemer was organized with 25 charter members. The Rev. John H. Hopkins served as pastor.
On July 2, 1890, trustees were instructed to secure four building lots at Acoma St. and First Avenue for the construction of a church building. On September 6, 1891, The Daily News reported that the new building at Acoma and First was complete. It was described as a “neat little structure of brick in the middle of the lots,” intended only as a “temporary” building. The seating capacity was 300, and membership was reported at 80 persons. Dr. G. M. Darley was installed as pastor on October 14, 1891.
Our historic building under went some renovations in 2007.
A Brief History of Our Church Building
The Church of the Redeemer had been holding services in Fleming Hall on Broadway, near First Avenue, and on July 2 1890, the trustees were instructed to secure building lots. The cost of these lots was $2,000 and on September 6, 1891, the Daily News reported, “The new building of the Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer at Acoma and First Avenue is now completed. It is a neat little structure, brick, in the middle of the lots. It is intended only as a temporary building. The seating capacity is 300.”
Six years after consolidation with “Capitol Avenue Presbyterian Church” the membership had grown from 275 to 500. Little had been done toward the concerted agreement to erect an adequate church, excepting the choice of plans on July 29, 1896. On April 26, 1905, a committee of fifteen was appointed to formulate plans looking to the erection of a complete church building. On May 24, 1905, it decided to build with new plans, displacing those of 1896, and to cost no more than $18,000.
The cornerstone of the new church, “First Avenue Presbyterian Church”, was laid in 1906 and the dedication of the new sanctuary was held on February 4, 1907. The architectural firm of Fallis & Stein, which also designed other Denver landmarks, including the neighboring Mayan Theater, designed the sanctuary. The Restoration
A wonderful restoration to this old historic sacred space took place in 2006-2007. The church and community are excited about this restoration and preservation work. The restoration of the hand painted windows in the bell tower was completed. Now the windows look like they did when this portion of the building was built in 1907.
The restoration of the Acoma Street doors and transom areas, and all stained glass windows and the parapet on the bell tower was also completed. This restoration was made possible through a generous grant from Colorado Historical Society and matching monies from the church.
This wonderful historic building is a jewel in the Historic Baker Neighborhood and is the gathering place for many community events.

Teach us to serve Thee
Teach us, good Lord, to serve Thee more faithfully; to give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil and not to seek for rest; to labour and not to ask for any reward, save that of knowing that we do Thy will, O Lord our God.
