Who we are

Our Vision

The vision of the First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro is to continue to be a community-minded congregation living out our love of Christ as we serve one another with humility, gentleness, and patience through God’s grace. We owe our Lord everything. We look to Him for daily guidance and we trust Him to lead us into our future. We will continue on mission programs, begun when our congregation was larger.

Instead of saying, “We can’t do that,” we will continue to say “How can we do that?” and know the Lord will help us find a way. We will continue to be aware of our community and the needs of the people in it. As a congregation we have responded to those needs and we will continue to do so. We have opened our building as a resource for community events, hoping to make people comfortable in God’s house. Our congregation is actively involved in feeding the hungry, serving meals at Disciples’ Kitchen and taking dinners to local shelters. We nourish our own members with Bread Breakers, which feeds not only bodies but also our spirits with fellowship and caring.

We embrace our heritage with an annual “Kirkin’o’th’Tartan” ceremony, opening our doors to others for mutual celebration. The church provides scholarships for preschoolers who need financial aid. We have an active deacons program, giving special attention to older, homebound members. We will continue to be proud of our nurturing and support for each other and for our community.

Mission Statement

The First Presbyterian Church desires to serve God, to nurture our congregation and community through worship and education, and to utilize the resources of our Presbytery. We will continue our long history and broad scope of mission involvement, and we will open our doors to all who desire to share the gifts of our building, our hospitality, our fellowship and Christ’s love. Based on feedback from the congregation of First Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro, the areas we will focus on are Mission, Hospitality, Preschool, and Effective Stewardship of Resources.

Leader Bio:
Rev. George W. Chapman III was installed as Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro in June of 2015. He originally hails from the Charlotte, NC area. He attended college at North Carolina State University (Go Wolfpack!), where he earned degrees in English and History, and later received a Master’s Degree in Illustration from the Savannah College of Art & Design. George would work a few years as a starving artist before embarking on a call to ministry. He earned a Masters of Divinity Degree from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, VA in 2006. While completing a church internship during his final year of study, he met incoming seminarian Myra Hiott, and the two would marry in the summer of 2008.

As Myra finished her studies at the seminary, George would serve in a variety of pastoral settings in the Richmond area before pursuing his first ordained call as pastor of Buena Vista Presbyterian Church in the fall of 2009. While in Buena Vista, George became involved in The Community Table of Rockbridge, which seeks to serve low-cost, nutritious meals to food-insecure families in the surrounding area. He also became active in the Buena Vista chapter of Rotary International and has served on the Committee for Relational Ministry for the Shenandoah Presbytery. As George pastored his congregation in Buena Vista, Myra completed her degree at the University of Virginia School of Law, and is presently a practicing attorney.

George has a variety of interests. Saturday mornings he can be found with Myra at the local farmers’ market or perusing the shelves at the used book store. He loves good food, whether it means staying home and cooking in or trying the latest eatery. When time allows, George and Myra look forward to any occasion to travel, explore and do anything generally outdoorsy. In his free time, he enjoys sketching, riding his bicycle and really bad zombie movies. George is a Presbyterian Church (USA) pastor through and through, and is proud to be part of the First Waynesboro family as he continues this next phase of his ministry!   Edit

First Presbyterian Church History

In the early 1700’s the leaders of Virginia encouraged the settlement of the Shenandoah Valley in order to strengthen the Western frontier against possible Indian attacks. As a result, many Scotch-Irish and Germans from Pennsylvania move into the Valley because of its fertile land.

With the Scotch-Irish came the Presbyterians. John Craig, a Presbyterian Minister, was instrumental in establishing about twenty mission outposts in the Valley. One of the first was located at Tinkling Spring near Fishersville. Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church established a mission outpost in Waynesboro. The mission outpost was continued in a log building until 1824, when a little brick church was erected in the old cemetery on New Hope Road, behind Willow Oak Plaza.

In 1846, the people of the Waynesboro mission petitioned Presbytery for permission to establish a church. The First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro was officially organized with 49 members on May 9, 1846. The first pastor was the Rev. William T. Richardson, who served until 1870. In 1878, the church erected a new and larger brick building at the top of Main Street hill, where the old News-Virginian building is located. The News-Virginian building is built around the original church structure, and the original front doors of the church have remained.

In 1911, a beautiful and large new sanctuary was completed at the corner of 11th Street and Wayne Avenue. In 1942, the Youth Building to the west of the sanctuary was erected. The Youth Building was renovated and additions made to the structures, connecting the Youth Building and the Sanctuary in 1960. In 1972, the sanctuary was renovated and an organ installed.

On May 3, 1983, workmen were burning paint off the cornice of the sanctuary when a spark started a fire. The old, dry attic wood caused the fire to spread quickly destroying the whole sanctuary wing. Rebuilding started in 1984. The first worship service held in the new sanctuary was on August 31, 1986, and the whole facility was dedicated to the Glory of God on October 12, 1986.

The current sanctuary organ is a three manual mechanical action (tracker) instrument, and was originally build by Woodberry and Harris of Boston in 1893 for St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, Providence, RI. The organ remained in use there until the 1950’s, when due to poor or negligent maintenance, it became unplayable. The Andover Organ Company restored the superb 19th Century mechanical action organ. It is the third largest tracker organ in Virginia and the largest of its age in the state.

The organ was refurbished in 2010, and the sanctuary remodeled to include a new and improved choir loft.
