Who we are
Welcome to the First Unitarian Church of Alton!
Our Mission
Outward Reaching ~ Inward Seeking
We are creating and nurturing an intentional community that values acceptance, social justice, and the embodiment of UU principles. Come, let us question together.
Our Vision
Inclusivity: We welcome, create & sustain a diverse community of belief that finds its identity in shared UU principles.
Communication: We share our mission and activities well in a variety of formats within and outside our church community.
Education: We learn and teach at all ages and provide space for spiritual and community growth.
Social Justice: We work for social justice in Alton and beyond.
Celebration: We embrace and celebrate our community and our world.
Our H.E.R.E. Covenant
To strengthen and nurture our Welcoming community, with love, compassion and respect, we covenant together to:
Honor and make space for our diversity; respect our volunteers, leaders and staff by supporting balance in their lives and in their personal and professional pursuits
Encourage each member to develop a personal spiritual practice that cultivates honesty and acceptance
Remembering our humanness, we acknowledge our imperfection and extend forgiveness to ourselves and others.
Engage within our own and the larger community with integrity by taking responsibility for our actions, facilitating right relationships, and living into the journey.
Our Services
We hold Sunday services in an historic sanctuary which is one of the loveliest and most inspiring places in Alton. We sing hymns, read words of prophetic people, honor milestones, share joys and concerns, and hear a message from our minister or a guest speaker. The church offers many other activities as well, and we invite you to attend any that interest you. For more details check out church this week, our monthly newsletter or our church calendar.
Our Principles
We welcome people of many backgrounds and beliefs. Rather than saying things we may not believe, or believing things we cannot understand, we try to live our lives according to a set of shared Principles and Purposes developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).

Help me to avoid every sin
Thanks to Thee, O God, that I have risen today, To the rising of this life itself; may it be to Thine own glory, O God of every gift, and to the glory, aid Thou my soul. With the aiding of Thine own mercy, even as I clothe my body with wool, cover Thou my soul with the shadow of Thy wing. Help me to avoid every sin, and the source of every sin to forsake, and as the mist scatters on the crest of the hills, may each ill haze clear from my soul, O God.
