Gardens Presbyterian Church History

In 1882, members of St. Andrew’s, Cape Town’s oldest Presbyterian Church, decided to establish a Sunday School to serve families settling in the still sparsely-populated residential areas of Gardens, Oranjezicht and Tamboerskloof. The school was a great success and, as the population of the area was growing rapidly, it was not long before it was felt that provision should also be made in this locale for worship services. On 27 May 1890, HE Sir Henry Loch, then Governor of the Cape Colony, laid the foundation stone of the new building at the corner of Hatfield, Orange and Annandale Streets that was to house both the church and school. The first service of worship was held to dedicate the building on 10 October that same year.

Within four years, the new congregation, originally established as an adjunct of St. Andrew’s, had become an independent church. In 1896, the church called the Rev. (later Dr.) John James McClure of the Irish Presbyterian Church. His ministry was to last for 29 years, during which time Gardens Presbyterian grew to prominence in the spiritual and cultural life of the surrounding community.

With the growth of the church, there was again a need for a more commodious sanctuary. In 1889, the congregation acquired land adjacent to the existing structure and began to raise funds for the construction of a new church. On 29 August 1901, HE Lord Milner, the Governor and High Commissioner, laid the foundation of our present church. The building was completed two years later, and dedicated on 11 October 1903. The original structure remains in use today as our “Founders’ Hall”. A larger hall was also added in the 1970s.

Today, our congregation includes members from all over the Cape Peninsula. Everyone is welcome at Gardens … why not join us?

The power of Christian prayer Teach us to serve Thee
Teach us, good Lord, to serve Thee as Thou deservest: To give and not to count the cost; To fight and not to heed the wounds; To toil and not to seek for rest; To labour and not ask for any reward, save that of knowing that we do Thy will.
