Who we are
Gethsemane Lutheran Church was founded in 1890 in the town of Hopkins, located just west of Minneapolis. Our congregation was originally comprised of farmers, factory hands and small business owners sharing fellowship in a small-town, "traditional" family setting.
As Hopkins has grown to become more ethnically and economically diverse, Gethsemane has grown with the community and has adapted its ministry through the years to meet changing needs.
Today Gethsemane Lutheran Church is a 1,400-member congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Our membership reflects the vitality of the many and varied west-suburban Twin Cities area neighborhoods, and visitors are welcomed from places near and far.

Leader Bio:
As senior pastor here at Gethsemane I am passionate about helping people grow in their walk of faith. Having been raised on the east coast and serving in ministry out west as well as in Minnesota, I have found a wide variety of ways people are engaged by God in their faith life. I love to help unique individuals find how their own story is intertwined with God’s story, and that together we make up God’s church for the sake of the world. I work with the leadership of this church and our staff to make sure we are united in that goal. In addition I teach young and old, am involved in our community as a Police chaplain, and respond to the pastoral care needs of our congregation.
I have been blessed to be married to my wonderful and talented wife Stephanie, whom I met in college at St. Olaf, and we have two amazing kids in high school, Sarah and Tyler. When not at church you can find me coaching or cheering them on in their various sport activities.
I have found Gethsemane to be a place for all to belong who want to be engaged in what God is doing in our neighborhoods as well as in our homes.

Sunday School / Children and Youth Activities
Under 12s:
Sunday School
Sunday School is offered for children age 3 through grade 6 at 9:40 AM. Children learn about Jesus, pray together, sing together, and have fun! Bible stories are taught in a variety of active ways linking Bible learning with daily life experiences. Each Sunday School class learns memory work throughout the year that they present to a Pastor in May.
Stepping Stones
Stepping Stones is a program that allows parents and their children to celebrate faith events together once each year during the Sunday School hour. At each event the children are visited by a pastor, create a memento and are photographed. These photos are collected in an album that is presented to each student at the end of his or her Sunday School career.
Kids' Art Show
Each year we celebrate the God-given gifts and talents of our children by displaying their artwork in our Kids' Art Show. A special room is designed for an exhibit and reception on the day of the show.
Children's Choir
Children's Choir, directed by Nancy Pearson, meets on Wednesday evenings. Children in grades 1-6 are welcome to join.

7th – 9th grade Confirmation ministry
Our 3-year Confirmation Ministry begins in 7th grade, meeting Wednesday nights from 6:30 –
8 PM, September – mid-May. Small groups of five to seven students led by adult and senior high volunteers meet to share their stories and discuss each week’s Bible lesson. Sunday mornings students take turns assisting in worship. Each year we have a fall retreat, host two overnight lock-ins, and offer some additional fellowship opportunities, worship field trips, and servant events.
“HOUSE”
A class and fellowship for 7th-12th grades, which meets in the Youth Room from 9:40 – 10:40 on Sunday mornings.
Raising leaders
Teens are invited to serve on our Youth Council, representing their 7th-12th grade peers to plan fellowships, and we recently participated in Peer Ministry Leadership training. We’ve been annually sending a teen as a voting delegate to our ELCA Synod Assembly. Each spring our teens team up to lead an entire Sunday
