Who we are
Unitarians are people of liberal religious outlook who are united by a common search for meaning and truth in life and living.
What do we believe?
We have no creed. We are free thinkers. Our group is made up of people with different views, beliefs and values. We celebrate Unity in Diversity – many beliefs, one faith.
MISSION STATEMENT
This Unitarian church aims to be a tolerant and loving society where people are encouraged to appreciate the wonder and mystery of existence, to study and practise together the values of truth, justice and compassion, and each to work out their own spiritual pathway.

Leader Bio:
I’m a former minister of Glasgow Unitarian Church (1975–83), now retired and husband of Barbara Clifford. I was born in the USA, found Universalism there while in secondary school, and after training for the ministry some years later came to Britain, where I was naturalised in Scotland in 1975.
For me, religion has an important philosophical aspect but the key base is a community in which personal spiritual development finds expression in practical ethical actions, individual and collective. Glasgow Unitarians comprise a small progressive community with quite a mixture of attitudes and commitments. My personal philosophy is centred in empirical process philosophy, set in a religious mixture of liberal Christianity, Buddhism, and an appreciation of what is sometimes referred to as the web of life.
My hobbies include stamp collecting, dancing (particularly Scottish Country Dancing), piping, astronomy, and learning foreign languages to survival level. Barbara and I have five children and eight grandchildren between us and we are greatly enjoying this ‘grandparent’ stage of our lives.

Glasgow Unitarian Church History
Glasgow Unitarian Church was founded in 1810.
At its peak there were around 22 Unitarian Churches in Scotland, and in Glasgow the congregation was large and prosperous enough to commission a classically styled church to seat 550 people in the mid-1850s.
See Andrew T. N. Muirhead (2015), Reformation, Dissent and Diversity: The Story of Scotland’s Churches, 1560-1960, London: Bloomsbury, pp. 183-185.
The Unitarian Church has a proud tradition of professional ministry and Glasgow congregation benefitted from well trained ministers through most of its history. Over the twentieth century ministers brought their own character and influence to bear on the congregation as it navigated a liberal religious course and adapted through the century.
Sometimes described as a “post-Christian” church, in the twenty-first century Glasgow Unitarians remain committed to tolerance and embrace the richness of different religious traditions. We seek to apply science, reason and curiosity in our pursuit of meaning and truth, as individuals, and compassion in creating a shared community.
Just like the patchwork wall-hanging in our worship room, our group is made up of people with different views, beliefs and values.

Forgive us
O God, forgive the poverty and the pettiness of our prayers . Listen not to our words but to the yearnings of our hearts. Hear beneath our petitions the crying of our need.
