Our Story
Our Beginning: A focus on mission and people
Our congregation was founded on the mission field at the edge of the frontiers of the Dominion of Canada where some of the most northerly farmland in the country was being opened up to production. As early as 1916, mission-funded ministers from the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches came here to found new congregations. In the 1920’s, as the railways were extended into the Peace Country, new towns grew up along the rail lines and in them, mission-supported churches were built and God’s Word was taught to the faithful and shared with the lost.
Early Church activities centred around the Sunday Schools for children, and Auxiliary activities, like the Ladies’ Aid formed in Berwyn in 1932, were there to help organize and sustain the congregations. Churches were central to many community social activities. The pews were full because that was what everyone did on a Sunday morning (or afternoon, or evening - there were many ministers who served multiple preaching points).
Grimshaw and Berwyn were, at one point, two separate Pastoral Charges. This arrangement was short term, as it could not be supported financially. There were various multi-point charge arrangements made over the years and by 1978 the current Grimshaw-Berwyn Pastoral Charge was in place.
Change continues within our communities. In 2003, the Bissell congregation in Berwyn merged with Grace in Grimshaw, converting us from a two-point to a single-point charge. In November 2010, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Grimshaw-Berwyn Pastoral Charge and Peace River Pastoral Charge to share our minister. This is expected to be an interim step to see if a merger of our Pastoral Charges is practical and workable.
As a United Church, we take seriously the admonishment of Christ in Matthew 25:35-40 :
"... For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
We now seek new opportunities to serve the broken and hurting members of our extended communities. While ongoing financial survival continues to be a concern to our Stewards, we know that this, by itself, is not a reason-for-being. This is a continuing discussion among our members, and new faces and voices are welcome to join in the debate and help us explore our collective spiritual growth and define our ongoing purpose as Servants of Christ to the wider community-at-large.
If you are looking for a spiritual home and open discussions on God, the meaning of scripture, personal faith and spiritual growth, and how these things inform us in our daily lives, you will find a place here with us. You are welcome. We look forward to seeing you!

Learn to know Christ
Learn to know Christ and him crucified. Learn to sing to him, and say, Lord Jesus, you are my righteousness, I am your sin. You have taken upon yourself what is mine and given me what is yours. You have become what you were not so that I might become what I was not.
