Who we are
Our Mission
Grant Street Loves the New Testament Church
It is our mission to be completely identified with the church of the first century. To accomplish this, we must be guided by the doctrine of the word of God, which is contained in the New Testament. Jesus declared doctrine as, “the seed of the kingdom” in Luke 8:11. A fundamental truth in life is, that a specific seed will produce when planted and will always produce after its own kind. We plant the word of God in the hearts of honest people and they through obedience become Christians. GOD ADDS THEM to His church just as He did in the first century. Since we are guided by the Word of God, we accept no man, or group of men as having authority to legislate for the church. The head of the Grant Street church is Jesus Christ, Ephesians 1:22. Like the churches established in the first century, we are an independent congregation located in Decatur, Alabama that is striving to grow under the authority of Christ. Elders were appointed at Grant Street early in the 1900s to look after the spiritual needs of the congregation. Men that met the qualifications outlined by the apostle Paul in Titus 1:5-9 and I Timothy 3:1-7. These men have the responsibility to “feed the flock” with the spiritual food found in the scripture, as well as being living examples for others to see, I Peter 5:1-3. Therefore, we are not governed by doctrines or creeds generated by man. but are bound by and ruled in both faith and practice by the Bible alone.
While carrying out our mission,” seeking the lost and serving the saved” we recognize the principles of the Old Testament and we seek to conform to the patterns identified in the New Testament. When the Bible speaks on any subject, we accept its words as final. We plead and pray for unity among all New Testament believers in the same manner as Christ. Unity and love were marks of first century discipleship; they are marks of the Grant Street family today.
Grant Street Loves the Truth
“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free” Jesus said as recorded in John 8:32. In John 14:6, Christ spoke these words, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” We believe all truth can be found in the word of God. He also stated, “If you love me you will keep my commandments.” We diligently strive to know, love and live the truth as found in God’s Word. Grant Street Loves Families
History has proven that stronger families make better churches and a healthier community. As we walk down the road of life; sorrow, joy, tragedy, jubilation, fear and hope, our families must be a foundation that sustains. The first institution established by God was the family, even before He established the church. We are seeking to grow stronger families through leadership seminars, summer lecture series, gospel meetings, vacation bible schools, workshops, retreats, youth programs, family programs and fellowship activities. Grant Street Loves our Community
The physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the people of Decatur are one of our deepest concerns. We lend assistance to those who have emergency needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. One of our ministries includes a large benevolent program which provides support to individuals, families and children’s homes.
Grant Street Loves People
Most of the people in our world live in spiritual and physical poverty. Out of a profound sense of gratitude for the many blessings Grant Street has received from God, we practice, “it is more blessed to give than receive.”

Grant Street Church of Christ History
A Brief History of the Grant Street Church of Christ
The Lord’s church had its beginning in Decatur with the start of what is now the Grant Street congregation. In 1910 a tent meeting was conducted on the spot where the building now stands. With R.N. Moody assisting, seven members rented a hall on Second Avenue. In a short time they rented a school house on Jackson Street in what was then New Decatur or Albany. Soon they bought this building and enlarged it to more than double its seating capacity.
In 1914, J.P. Ezell began work with the congregation and remained until 1921. Brethren Moody and Ezell laid a good foundation for its continued growth. The first elders were: Joseph Ward. AC. Joiner, C.U. Campbell, Davis Hodges, J.W. Flowers and Wheeler Wilson. Claude Woodruff worked with the church for two years following J.P. Ezell, then in 1924, Thornton Crews came. The present building, or the main part of it was erected during the ministry of Brother Crews in 1925.
JR. Greer worked here from 1927 until 1930. The church was without a regular preacher until 1934, when George Emptage came and stayed until 1936. R.D. Underwood followed him and Lindsey Allen came in 1937.
Brother Allen was followed by R.D. Underwood who was here for the second time, then Charles Brewer, Charles Chumley, Irvin Lee, Jimmy Faulkner, Elbert Young, Ralph Stout and Mike King. For a period of three months in 2002, Dennis Jones served as the interim preacher. In June 2002 Alan Watkins began his work as Grant Street’s full time minister.
During Brother Underwood’s second labor with the congregation, in 1948, the educational unit was added to the building and in 1969 the entire facility was renovated.
Great men, some of whom have gone home, have served as elders and preachers and have left the church with a great history. There have been no bigger challenge nor greater work, however, than at the present under the oversight of its elders: Harold Bailey, Ken Pirtle, Jere Spurlin, Doug Weatherspoon and Robert Herring.
Space does not permit the listing all those of the past and present who have served in varied capacities, but we thank God for everyone and ask his blessings on our present labors.

I ask for...
I ask you neither for health nor for sickness, for life nor for death; but that you may dispose of my health and my sickness, my life and my death, for your glory... You alone know what is expedient for me; you are the sovereign master, do with me according to your will. Give to me, or take away from me, only conform my will to yours. I know but one thing, Lord, that it is good to follow you, and bad to offend you. Apart from that, I know not what is good or bad in anything. I know not which is most profitable to me, health or sickness, wealth or poverty, nor anything else in the world. That discernment is beyond the power of men or angels, and is hidden among the secrets of your providence, which I adore, but do not seek to fathom.
