Hallelujah Fellowship Baptist Church History

A Journey of Faith... in Search of Worship

The history of Hallelujah Fellowship Baptist Church is a story of a faith journey of Filipino Christians in Toronto, Canada. In fact, it is more of His story as it reveals His work and ministry among these Christians who want to make a distinct contribution to Kingdom-building. It is a faith journey as it reveals the constant need for God’s provision and guidance to build a community of believers that continually seek to make worship as the cornerstone of its foundation. The name of the church itself is declarative of that intent as it is an expression of a community that makes praise as the reason for its existence.

This story of worship began in 1980 when a group of Filipino Christians were worshipping together with an Anglo-Saxon congregation at Parkdale Baptist Church. A desire for a distinct culture-based worship led to the creation of a separate all-Filipino service in August 8, 1980 under the leadership of Rev. Fidencio Dumaran bearing the name Parkdale Filipino Baptist Mission. The joining of Rev. Jess Roque and family to the church ministry in the middle of 1981 later led to the turning over of the leadership to him in February 1982.

Another important milestone to this journey of faith was the recognition by the Toronto Area Association of Baptist Churches (currently the Toronto Baptist Ministries) in April 8, 1982 that led to the establishment of its formal name to Parkdale Filipino Baptist Church. In May of the same year, the Convention Baptists of Ontario and Quebec (CBOQ, formerly BCOQ) confirmed recognition of the church during its annual Assembly in Kingston, Ontario.

The first decade of the church was really an establishment phase as is it is characterized by several transfers of its worship services as well as change of name. In October of 1984, the congregation moved again this time to Farmer Memorial Baptist Church at South Kingsway and carried the name Filipino Baptist Church to express its distinct identity. Four years after such transfer, the church was able to attain its formal registration as a non-profit organization. Farmer Memorial Baptist Church also encouraged the Filipino congregation to include “Farmer” in its name resulting to the change of name to Farmer Filipino Baptist Church in 1990.

On New Year’s Eve of 1993, the congregation expressed the desire to have their own building. For this purpose, the Extended Prayer Night was instituted on the last Friday of every month to seek for God’s guidance. As an expression of faith that this desire will be blessed, the incorporation of the church was pursued, leading to its realization in August 8, 1994 with the adoption of the corporate name Hallelujah Filipino Baptist Church.

Within just one year after such desire was expressed, the Lord answered the prayers and the Toronto West Gospel Hall at 425 Pacific Avenue was purchased at half its market value. To this day, worship is conducted in this beautiful church and is indeed a testament to God’s faithfulness. The congregation formally moved in on a Saturday, February 18, 1995. The next day, a Consecration Service was held to signify the congregation’s gratitude to God’s provision as well as dedication of the building for God’s purpose.

On October 16, 1997, Rev. Jess Roque officially tendered his retirement and after much prayer, the church called Pastor Hermogenes “Junn” Lagud to be the Senior Pastor. A Retirement Service was held in the morning of the same day, and an Installation Service for Pastor Lagud was initiated in the afternoon and officiated by Dr. Doug Coombs, the Moderator of TAABC.

The succeeding decade saw the growth of the ministry of the Church. To define its mission reach, the corporate name was changed to Hallelujah Fellowship Baptist Church to signify that the church’s ministry goes beyond cultural and ethnic boundaries.

Its current ministries include Worship Service every Sunday, Cottage Bible and Prayer Fellowship, organizational ministries, and Cell groups. As a testament to God’s faithfulness, the Extended Prayer Night was continued and in the evening of the last Friday of every month, the congregation gathers in prayer to seek God’s continuous guidance.

As an expression of its missiological orientation and enable peoples within Canada and abroad to experience God’s saving Grace so that they in turn could become worshippers, the church became intentional in its missions objective by separating thirty percent of its general fund for missions. To date, it provides support to more than twenty missionaries and missions organizations, and is about to launch its own missions effort by supporting home-grown missionaries and initiating its own missions program.

His story is clearly imbedded in the history of HFBC. It shows how God can use a people determined to be under His Lordship to accomplish great things even with modicum resources. Its name will always express its identity as a community that seeks to make God as the center of its being.

The power of Christian prayer Help my unbelief
Dear God, help my unbelief. When I'm in pain, I forget that you care about me. I forget that you have helped me through my trials. I forget that you hold me in your arms to keep me safe. I forget that you are feeling my pain with me. I forget that you love me, I forget that I am important to you. Show me your presence - let me feel your enveloping love. Heal my hurting soul. Thank you for staying with me even in my unbelief.
