Who we are
Heritage Baptist Church began in 1954 in the northeast section of Memphis known then as the “Thrifthaven” suburb. A group of God’s people led by the Holy Spirit envisioned a lighthouse for God in this section of the city. Pastor John Adair started the church in a small house on Wells Station Road. The fifteen believers who met for that first Sunday service chose “Thrifthaven Baptist Church” as their name. God blessed through the years, with hundreds being saved and going out from the church to serve the Lord around the world. In 1968 the church voted to become an Independent Baptist Church. Dr. Charles Britt came as pastor in 1971. Thrifthaven Baptist Academy began in the fall of 1973 with over 400 students.
In 1996 Thrifthaven Baptist Church voted to relocate the ministry. Due largely to changes taking place in the neighborhood, the attendance at both the school and the church had been declining for some time. In March of 1998, Rich Sevilla, Jr. was called as pastor and to lead the ministry through the relocation process. In January of 1999, the church voted to rename itself as Heritage Baptist Church and began meeting in a temporary location in Cordova. Property was purchased in Cordova and dedicated on February 13, 2000. On July 1, 2007, Heritage Baptist Church opened its doors for the first time at 711 N. Houston Levee Road.
God has providentially preserved this ministry for His glory. Though the location of the church has changed, the commitment to God’s word has not. As we look to the future, we desire to present the same message that has been changing lives for 2,000 years. If the Lord is leading you to seek a place where you can serve and grow from the preaching ministry of his word, prayerfully consider Heritage Baptist Church.

Children
At Heritage, even children bring their Bibles! We have age graded Sunday School classes. We use a structured curriculum that allows children who faithfully attend to learn about every book of the Bible. During the morning service young children are dismissed before the preaching to receive a message that is applied to them at their age level. So kids, don’t forget to bring your Bible!
Patch the Pirate is a children’s choral program for ages three to twelve. During the school year, the clubs meet on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM. Children will be taught godly character and encouraged to have daily devotions. The fun songs they learn are intermingled with fun games and Bible stories. Once a month, the pirates recite their verses, sing a song, and tell a story to the adults!
