Hickory Springs ARP Church History

Church History

Hickory Spring is a member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian (ARP) Church denomination. The doctrines and government of the ARP grow out of the teachings of the Scriptures. Our worship centers on bible truth and guidance in sermons and Psalms singing.

The ARP began back in the 17th and 18th centuries. Problems within the Church of Scotland led to the formation of two groups that left the Church of Scotland and established presbyteries directly bearing on our own history.

One group formed the Reformed Presbytery. This group is sometimes called the Covenanters. The other group formed the Associate Presbytery. They are sometimes known as the Seceders.

People from these two presbyteries made their way to America, some by way of Ireland and Holland. Here, they merged to form the Associate Reformed Synod in 1782. This is the date used as the birthday of our denomination.

In 1935 the ARP as we know it today was formed.

Brief History of Hickory Spring ARP by Wilmot Green

The church was formally organized in 1859 by Rev. J. M. Brown, but had been meeting informally in homes and a log house across the road from the present church grounds.

A group of 14 or 15 families had left York County in South Carolina around Thanksgiving Day in 1852. They spent 99 nights on the way, arriving in March 1853. My great grandfather was in this group. I remember my grandmother telling of crossing the Saline River east of the present town of Warren, and it was frozen! I have lived in this area all my 78 years and I have never seen this river frozen solid enough for me to walk across much less drive a wagon and team of mules or horses across.

Family names in the group leaving South Carolina in 1852 were: Millholland, Leslie, Crawford, Dickey, Thompson, Wylie, Lathan, Simpson, Kenmore, Davis, and Stewart. Many of these family names are still present here in Bradley County. Many of the older members are buried in the Hickory Spring cemetery.

The present church building was built beginning with the tearing down of the old building in 1950. The new building was completed in 1952 and dedicated in March of 1953. At times, looking back through the years, the church had nearly 200 members but now we are down to a small number of faithful members.

Looking Ahead

As the Lord has, in the past, increased our numbers, we are looking to him to bring in new families and singles today.

We presently share a minister with the Wood Avenue Presbyterian Church of Monticello. That is why our worship service starts at 9 AM. If your schedule would be better served, please join the Monticello congregation for worship at 11 AM. Their address is: 207 West Wood Avenue.
