Holy Cross Episcopal Church History
Holy Cross is an amazing church and an amazing story of faith. The parish began its life in worship on Mother's Day, May 9, 1976, at Scenic Heights Elementary School. The inspiration for this parish was born in 1974 in the hearts of parishioners of St. Christopher's Church, itself the child of the missionary endeavors of historic Christ Church downtown Pensacola.
Groundbreaking for construction of the present sanctuary occurred in August of 1978. The doors were opened for worship on Sunday, March 25, 1979.
Much of the construction of the interior was crafted by parishioners: the Altar, the Altar furniture, the central stained glass window, the "Stations of the Cross" paintings on the north wall, the platforms and rails for the choir and altar; all come from labors of love and energy of the membership of this place.
The first two wings of the education complex on our north side were added in a construction project of parishioners in 1989. Classrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, and multipurpose room were constructed with an eye to a grander complex in our future by which a full parish hall complex would someday give this parish the space and capabilities of ministry to meet all the foreseeable needs of church and community outreach alike. With these facilities in place, the community outreach of the parish continues to grow.
We have ministries and classes to fit every need and interest, and a quick glance at our weekly calendar will reveal programs and groups meeting from morning to night. Because we are nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood, we are also able to offer programs and fellowship opportunities that are unique for such a large place, such as family suppers on Wednesday, and Youth activities on evenings throughout the week.
In short, we are big and yet small, and we hope you will find something to feed your soul at Holy Cross.

Father, make of me a crisis man. Bring those I contact to decision. Let me not be a milepost on a single road; make me a fork, that men must turn one way or another on facing Christ in me.
