Hood United Methodist Church History
The history of Hood United Methodist Church began some years prior to 1891 when the present building was erected.
Hood United Methodist Church was established as a Methodist Episcopal Church in the late 1800's by "Uncle" Lindsey Robertson, who pastored the congregation until his death. Circuit riders (clergyman who traveled on horseback from church to church) then took over the church until 1891 when Rev. Darby started holding regular services, first in the old Baptist Church building and then in the Congregational Church building. Reverend Hervey Smith spaded the first shovel of dirt for the building. The foundation was laid by D.N. Kitchen and Sons, and bricks were furnished at cost from the Britain Brick Yard in Republic.
After the Sanctuary was complete in 1891, it was dedicated and named Hood Methodist Episcopal Church in honor of W.E. Hood who had donated the most money for the construction fund.
The first Sunday School class of 100 members was started by Reverend Smith in July 1892. In 1953, an education building was completed and named Asbury Hall.
In 1986, the Greene County Historical Society declared Hood United Methodist Church as a historical site. Hood is the oldest original church building in Republic still in use.
In 2000, the Christian Life Center opened, doubling the space available for attendance, education, and fellowship. As a multipurpose building the Christian Life Center also provided new capabilities for recreation, concert events, and contemporary worship.
The building across Walnut street from Hood UMC, which previously had housed numerous businesses and the city post office, was purchased and renovated inside to house Hood UMC's youth ministry. In 2013, the building became known as The Lighthouse.
Church Renovation
In 2015, our building committee surveyed the congregation to determine facility needs in these key areas: finishing the Christian Life Center (CLC) upstairs with new classroom and conference space, installation of an elevator, Bridges Hall to become a new and secure children's ministry and worship area, and a new hospitality/dining area adjacent to the CLC.
Renovation of the new upstairs classrooms and addition of an elevator in the CLC were finished in January 2017. Three new classrooms, a new conference room, and a new elevator were completed and dedicated in February 2017. Meanwhile, plans were being considered and evaluated to continue renovations for the new Bridges Hall Children's Area.
The Administrative Board has agreed to begin the renovation of the new Bridges Hall Children's Area, which will include a safe, secure area with staffed and express check-in areas, 4 multipurpose children classroom areas, nursery and toddler areas, and a children's worship area. Expected renovation start date is May 2017 with completion in the fall of 2017.

Abide with us
O Holy Spirit of God, abide with us; inspire all our thoughts; pervade our imaginations; suggest all our decisions; order all our doings. Be with us in our silence and in our speech, in our haste and in our leisure, in company and in solitude, in the freshness of the morning and in the weariness of the evening; and give us grace at all times humbly to rejoice in Thy mysterious companionship.
