Immaculate Conception Church History
Immaculate Conception Church
In the early 1900's the Catholic Polish immigrants began to settle in Southington and attended Saint Thomas Parish. From the beginning there was an unfulfillment felt through the Polish community and they sought to form Immaculate Conception Parish. A corner lot was available and located across from the Falcon Hall and it was purchased in August of 1915 by Fr. Woroniecki. By the middle of September a rectory and land for a future church were secured. On September 15, 1915 a first Mass was held that marked the official start of the Parish.
Since funds were limited, it was decided that a basement Church would be build first that would serve as the foundation for a future church. The dedication of the Basement Church took place on July 9, 1916 with Bishop Nilan and a large throng of the faithful present. This building would serve as both a church and parish hall for the next seven years. In 1923 the construction began on the structure that is now Immaculate Conception Church.
The bell, still in use, was blessed by Bishop John G. Murray, later Archbishop of St. Paul Minnesota. Fr. Woroniecki remained with the parish until November of 1927 when he was transferred to St. Joseph Parish in Rockville.
In the year 2021, with a steady decline in priests and parishioners continuing in the Catholic population, St. Thomas Church, Immaculate Conception Church, and St. Dominic Church were beginning the start of a townwide merge and parishioners began to attend Masses at the two merged church buildings. In the fall of 2022, the merge of St. Thomas Parish, St. Dominic Parish, Immaculate Conception Parish, Mary Our Queen Parish, and St. Aloysius Parish into St. Luke Parish became formalized.
