Who we are

Jubilee Church Hull is a people united by faith, friendship and fun! We love this city and it’s surrounding towns and villages. We believe God loves it too, and that he is passionate to see a strong and vibrant multicultural church grow in it. For this purpose we gather together to represent him to the people of this city region.

In Luke 4, Jesus pronounces to the people gathered in the temple courts his purpose in coming to earth as a man. In this he quotes from the Prophet of Isaiah the following verses: “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”

We are passionate about continuing the work which Jesus began, to fulfil these promises, which were written in the book of Isaiah 61:1-4. Therefore, we aim to be a church that is:

Spirit Receiving

We are a church where the Holy Spirit is active in our midst. We want to encourage His activity in our meetings and every day lives so that we might be more effective in our Christian lives.

People Reaching

We are a church that seeks to proclaim and live out the good news of Jesus Christ to the many and varied communities and cultures of the city of Hull, the region, and across the world.

Potential Releasing

We are a church that wants to see everyone experience the freedom Christ can bring, so that we can purposefully use all of the gifts and talents that God has given us.

Community Restoring

We are a church passionate about relieving suffering and fighting injustice. Through giving of our time and resources we seek to take an active role in the meeting of people’s needs, the regeneration of our communities, and the planting of other churches.

Jubilee Church Hull History

STORY SO FAR

As a movement Newfrontiers is committed to starting churches across the world. As part of this process churches across the UK began praying for the city of Hull. A number of people from across the Newfrontiers family of churches felt God calling them to the city of Hull to help start a church under the leadership Steve and Jo Whittington.

People began moving from all over the UK, from as far afield as Brighton, Kent and Teesside to plant with them. In September 2006 twenty-five adults and children gathered in a small church hall to launch what was to become Jubilee Church Hull.

Over the next few months the church grew rapidly, with many people becoming Christians, and the once small group was forced to move across the road from its original home to a larger venue, called The Octagon. For the next 18 months Jubilee Church met there, growing in size and influence with a multicultural flavour. This included Steve Whittington and Matt Weedall becoming elders, and the church establishing itself as a legal charity and company.

In August 2008 we moved to our own building, Jubilee House, given to us by Walton Street Brethren Church. We established mid-week small groups, an Alpha course, English classes, a coffee morning, youth and student groups, as well as our Sunday morning meetings, weekly and monthly prayer meetings.

In September 2009 John Flavell became an Elder and work started on improving Jubilee House with funding from charitable trusts and generous giving from Jubilee Church members.

We continued to grow and increase our community activities. Due to the limitations of our building and our ongoing growth we purchased Central Methodist Hall in Hull City Centre and began meeting there in May 2012.

Since the move we have continued to grow to a congregation of over 200 and found new ways in which to serve the community, including hosting Hull Foodbank, working in Prisons with a charity called In2Out, building a new shower and laundry block for the homeless and launching our Life College.

Our team has also grown with Andrew Stephens joining the staff as our Church Manager in early 2014 and Dan Fryer becoming a full time elder in August 2014. At the same time we employed Julie Fawcett who now works part time as ’Life College Manager’ and have a part time cleaner called Russ Barlow.

In September 2016 we sent a number of our members to start a new church in East Hull called River City Church with John Flavell leaving Jubilee to lead the church with his wife Abi.
